You all proboly remember the 90s cinematic cgi sequences like in the old final fantasy games ultima 9 gothic. So i was wondering How did they make them? final fantasy 7 for example (btw they blend those into the gameplay very well) appear to have bump mapping and shaders and stuff. how did they do it back in that day when direct x 6 was the only thing around. Also how could i recreate that retro cgi look with todays technology?

Well , they may have used software like 3d studio which was released in 1990. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3ds_Max_release_history

Yep, just google 3d studio 4 . But you need a Dos emulator. I've made some tests , it works! But wow... it's really 'retro' (it tooks me 10 minutes just to create a cube , a light and render ).

I think they used Maya actually for the Final Fantasy series, though I could be wrong. Besides, bump mapping is probably older then you.

If you want to have that old CGI look, just make everything look like plastic and set your shadows to hard lines and complete black.

I used to use 3DStudio Max 2.5 in the DOS days. You needed a 386DX with its powerful math co-processor. Brings back memories

i am thinking also you need to put some filter on the final avi in a video editor to make it look less ingame type video. Right now, a lot of cutscenes in games are all rendered ingame so it looks seamless, but honestly i really like th old cgi cutscenes, i dont know whats up with me but i really like retro stuff for some reason,

The Obviously out of game videos added a sense of achievement as It usually meant you completed a part of the game or level
