OK, I'll be as nice as possible. It's what we call a cardboard cutout. All the sides are the same width apart.

What you need to do is take a close look at the real gun and try to see which areas are further in and wich areas stick out.
Take the pistol grip for example, on a real gun this is much smaller than the rest of the gun.

Good luck

but its only 1 part of the gun so its mainly all the same width but if you look at the handle thing on the top its less width than the rest of the stock

That doesn't matter. Even though they may be the same size there is normally bevels and details. If we could have a pic it would make it easier to tell you what to change.

I think the stock is suppost to be more rounded and smooth. I whipped up some quick model to show you (It's missing alot of details and by no means is any good.

@advent7011

Looking at your gun just tells me you did not watch any video tutorials!

No mater how lame or boring this video is, watch it.

Not blender but 3DS max Everything i did could be done in blender though.

I may aswell tell you how i did it as you aren't getting to far with your method.

I made a cylinder and lined it up with the begining of the stock untill the gap at the start of the main body of the stock. I then beveled in and back out by the same amount. Extruded accross untill the next indent and beveled again. I then extruded to the end. After that it was a simple process of cutting in 2 loops for the top and bottom pieces and extruding them down. once they had reached the places they needed to be i created a loop and bridged.

Or something like that. But after that i added in control loops and smoothed. (Don't worry about that yet, Get the hang of modeling before learning about subdividing).

Any questions just ask Hope i helped

Well for one it looks like you only used the extrusion function.
Try not making a real gun, make a Halo or some futuristic gun, think of holding the gun in your hand, how would it fit you. dont just make a gun, customize a gun you would want to shoot and when you do that you will like what you have made, (its art) making things you like will lead to greater and better things for other parts of a game or gun, model ect..

Say like you want a gun to shoot large rounds, so the gun will be heavy, well then your char must be strong, say instead of being strong he could have a suit on for more lifting power so now your making things in more detail and making things better and having a much better outcome.

Try thinking of you yourself shooting the gun you made.

Making a real gun is the best thing to do. There's no need to worry about concept or if it would actually work.

well apparently that didn't help him much.
I was merely trying to get him to use his imagination were anything
is possible. if he cant do that then what would be the point of
modeling. As you can see how far he went on the gun
he posted. It would be time to go to a different approach, who knows he might be better at just creating instead of copying.

I guess but it's a bit too early too worry about creativity is it not?

I remember when i used to use blender, I never made a full gun. Instead i made more simple things. Hovertanks, Turrets etc. They weren't that good but they did help me learn.

Here's some pics:

They were mainly just beveled things

no..

hahaha thats basically my point.
You made things from your head, That helps you to learn.
I was giving an idea on how you later on the road you
advance in that simple learning/creativity. What you had
made in those pics are things that are futuristic, no such
thing as a hovering tank... it came from your mind.
Simple to advance is the way to learn. I'm guessing you
learned to put tracks on that tank right?

The first model I ever made was a Hello Kitty, first shot and
I believe I did well. Now I cant stop learning all this 3d modeling.
Its fun!

Edit: also it took me almost a week, sometimes spending full days
on this model, its simple I know but thats how I learn, I want things perfect. Now I can do all that in seconds, but i'm still learning

however even if "making things from your head" is "better for learning" it isnt easier, i suggest modelling out of an image and looking at some tutorials, thats how i learned, I personally believe that modelling guns from images is more practical since you have a "helper", to go from.

Just throwing this out here.

I would say when learning ALWAYS model real things, take guns for example.

If i have a reference and need to nail all of the details to look as realistic as possible, i have loads of reference images to help me along. By doing this i can carry the knowledge of how to model those specific shapes onto my next project. With guns you will more than likely come across a very awkward shape to model, which makes you take your time and again learn techniques to achieve the end result.

If you are going from the top of your head, you dont have any complex shapes to model, and therefor you are not inclined to model those complex areas, because, who will notice? Doing this means that you will learn easy ways to model basic shapes, and if you then decide to later on try to model a real life object, those complex shapes are going to be a whole lot harder to model.

Okay, some crits on your newest model:

There are way too many faces, you could easily cut a few of them down. Also, the button could probably be added into the main geometry. The button is also subdivided too much, you could probably cut that down and still have it look relatively round.

yah but he did do that and didn't do very well.
Also yes using pictures for reference like im doing right now for
robot char's helps allot. its an art its all in your stile of creating. I was just wanting this future artiest advent to discover the artiest that he holds, its not always best to do things other peoples ways.

@advent7011 think low poly, if you were to put that on a char
player in screen view it would slow things down a bit...
get by by making things such as in my model, the eyes are painted on but the nose is sticking out, buttons ect.. all can be made from textures and not poly's.

by not making so many!

just be inventive on things, thats what you have to do to be a person who models things.

i would probably redo the button since it would require less work than to manually select half of those edges and delete them

much better now, however, sorry for being a pain, but that button could be even more reduced, i recommend using a 8 or maybe a 10 sided cylinder for that, no use making that button more high poly than the rest of the moedl. I can see that you are using a 16 sides cyl, and tbh thats way to much for a square model, i say stick to a 8 or 10 cylinder, again sorry for being a pain.

texture looks superb!

I don't know but I think you just unwrapping everything without creating seams. learn to make seams then unwrap everything so you
can make a better texturing.

you make a selection of edges then hit crtl E and choose mark seam, then when you unwrap it it'll use that as the edge for the unwrap
