I was just thinking about the Lord of the Rings and how they used all that fancy (and expensive) motion capture technology to create Gollum and the like. Then I got an idea.

Couldn't Microsoft Kinect be used for motion capture? I mean, the thing can track the movements of 20 joints at 30 FPS, even two people at a time. For $149.99.

As long as the device supports PCs, It probably wouldn't be very hard for a developer to create some simple animation recording software, right?

Or am I just dreaming?

I'm sure it could be possible, And even if the device doesn't support PCs, I'm sure a driver could be created - I remember editing some other brand of webcam driver so that I could use my PS2 Eyetoy as a PC webcam

Would Microsoft let you, if you planned to distribute the animations in a film or game? There must be a license thing for this software, or something like that. Sounds interesting though

Pff, how would Microsoft know you used Kinect to create the motion capture?

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

Everyone would know where the animations came from, because it would be too cool for us to make otherwise.

Monkey Mja: Why the hell would you have text on animations?

Would be great, then I would actually think about the Soft 360 Micro Box or whatever it is xD

Because the chances of kinect working good enough to be compared to commercial mocap is incredibly unlikely?

That's a horrible argument... there's all kinds of little digital quirks and things that go with one program or another... although you would probably have to have a detective or something on your trail who was sifting through binary to be found.

And a piece of hardware could leaves those?

Don't forget that any software designed to do this wouldn't be created by Microsoft so it's unlikely that there would be the slightest hint that the MoCap was done with a kinect.

I think they should market it like this. Honestly, I can imagine loads of people who would buy one just for mocap.

Yeah, but this is Microsoft. They charge money for you to change your online name, how much do you think they'd charge to use their hardware for uses other than in crappy games?

Eh true. They'll probably make you buy some kind of license or something equally meaningless and stupid.

Doesn't MoCap require six angles to make the animations anyway?

And yes while MS say it's very good, they also said the XBox would work...which isn't true. Now I've gotta wait 'til December for my replacement... D:

I don't get it... why do you have to wait so long?

I think this is a pretty good idea to explore. Yes, the quality won't be as good as commercial mocap. But, that isn't what indie developers shoot for anyway. I'd rather see the software developed and see how far it can go rather than see the project flounder because some one says it won't be any good. We'll never know until we try.
