Quote: "Shotokan also, I was a part of the Traditional Association of Shotokan Karate led by Shihan John Van Weenan (I have to be big-headed and mention his name ). Got my 1st Kyu before leaving, now that I've finished my education, I don't need to study, therefore I can get back into it and finally earn my black belt.
But I'm glad you said Shotokan, I braved Wado-Ryu when at University (no Shotokan dojos within walking distance) and...it just felt so watered down, they corrected me on my stance by making it weaker and shortened my movements too, saying, "we focus on speed, whereas before you would have been focusing on power", which struck me as odd, because we focused on both. "
I'm also glad you said Shotokan, because honestly, most other styles just look silly to me.
I've been taking karate for 6 months, and I'm merely a 7th kyu. It wasn't two weeks ago that we had the very prestigious Angie Woolum come teach a class. Check her out on youtube, she lives right around my area. If I'm not mistaken, I believe she's on Chuck Norris' five man fighting team. Can't get much more prestigious than that, am I right?
But I hope to make my 6th kyu in a couple months, especially considering I could've went to 6th kyu on my last test, but decided not to because I don't want to skip any ranks. At this rate, I should have my 1st dan by my early 20's, and that's when the real fun starts.
After I achieve 1st dan, I'll probably start taking jujitsu on the side, just for the hell of it. It's one of the only styles that I
don't laugh at in secrecy. American Style karate makes me want to nuke my own country.
