Somehow this has been stuck in my head for the past few weeks. Why did Ensemble cancel Age of Empires 4?! IMO they could've maintained one of the best RTSs, but decided not to.

Ah well, at least we have StarCraft 2! =D

They canceled it because Ensemble Studios was dissolved by Microsoft after Halo Wars.

Meaning that Halo Wars didn't sell well or MS just fired Ensemble?

I don't think AoE 3 has been around long enough to make another sequel just yet.

I think I saw somewhere that Ensemble actually got shut down, which doesn't make sense either.

Actually that's another favorite of mine, wish I didn't lose the install disk. (For titans, anyway)

I agree, too bad that both their sequels weren't that good.

All the Age of Empires games, Age of Mythology, and Rise of Nations (including the expansion pack) are great games.

Ensemble studios were shut down by Microsoft after the creation of Halo wars, I can't remember the reasons but it was planned. Some of them left to form Robot Entertainment.

Though they have yet to announce anything.

It's not that bad, I enjoy it. It takes a little different strategy than AoE2. But I also have the war chief expansion(came bundled with it) so I have 3-4 extra civilizations.

Never cared for mythology, i thought it was a bad game.

Empire Earth was and is the best RTS ever made, Age of Empires sucks compared to EE

Go get a copy of EE and I bet you end up loving it even more than AoE, I still play it now and its been out for over 8 years. There is also a petition for EE so that another will be made, though 2 and 3 sucked and had little in the ways of the first.

Agree on EE1; the following 2 tried to put too much into it, and ruined the series, IMO.

IMO EE sucked.

Earth 2150, however, was an awesome game (as well as the Moon Project).

EE sucked, no you can't say that!

The graphics may indeed be bad for todays standards, but the game play was next to nothing, it was excellent.

To be honest, I only played the demo of AoE, but it was kind of like EE from what I remember, but lacked a lot.

Probably just the trial, I know that the aoe2 trial limited you quite a bit.

Age of Mythology was probably one of the greatest RTS games to date. If there is any game that they should make a sequel of, it's aom.

EDIT:
By the way, Ensemble split into 2 new studios:
Bonfire Studios

and

Robot Entertainment

Why would Robot Entertainment still hang onto the fact that some of their employees made AoE3 and Halo Wars? Doesn't Microsoft own the rights to those games XD?

Ensemble studios were shut down partly because the amount of time they spend developing games which they get half way through and start from scratch again because they never meet their own high standards, meaning Microsoft was losing money with them, from what i read back when this happened

Never played Red Alert. Might try it.

Sorry I'm getting off topic here. Neither of the games I'm discussing are AoE.

HL2 > Red Alert

But that's totally offtopic as, that's not what the thread is about and ofcourse, it was always obvious.

HL2 is not an RTS. If we were discussing games over all I would have much better nominees then Civ.

We could have a battle of the video games. See which is most respected in the TGC community.

Its seems stylised graphic forms are on the rise. Tf2 has been the most successful to date. Okami is the last gen greatest. Out of curiosity and hopefully not to off topic, but why do you think more games are going for a stylised approach? Its normally a make or break choice, is it effort or effiecntcy based? or to make it stand out more? I know realism takes alot of work but it would be consistant in standard while stylised has to keep to a set standard chosen by the designer and the artists would all have very specific roles to keep the styles matching, one member on statics, one on characters ect

So would you use stylised or not?

I have to admit I was a little let down by the new theme they gave it. They could've chosen it because it would stand out of the market, because it's more efficient for online play, I really don't know. I still think it's better than no AoE at all, even though I would've chosen the same theme as the previous games.

I think the latter. TF2's style makes it seem alot younger - I mean it came out the same time as HL2:Ep2, but still looks great because realism can be overtaken with a few extra pixels on each texture or such...

If you make a realistic game - like CoD 4, then the next game will look more realistic - and make the former look terrible, I loved CoD 4, but now I can't play it after playing CoD mod 2 because it looks terrible...

Haven't played Okami but it looked quite good - it's the Wii game with the wolf and painting, right? AS far as TF2 goes, I'd like to think it'd still look pleasing when TF3 eventually comes...

Of course, there better be Half Life 3 before that, or I'm slapping Gabe Newell so hard he'll dissolve into hamburgers...

LOL that's what El Goorf said, too. Glad the game's becoming more known.

I want to try the beta, just have to get my hands on a gamertag first.

I think stylised is great for new games, but from those screenshots I will NOT be playing AoE online. I enjoy the graphics from AoE2 a lot, even if the game couldn't handle a high enough resolution for my monitor, but the pixelation gives it a good old school feel.

@Chenak:
I love dungeon keeper, I had one and 2 gold editions until they got majorly scratched up when the cases didn't hold them in properly.
