Max and LithUnwrap will texture by Face

Max is better as you can edit the edges visible to make the faces - u can on it on a standard sphere though.
Simple create it, click on UV Map, click on Faces
and it will extend each face flat onto the surface of the whole texture, so standard spheres would be Square and there for be fit exactly to the textures coordinates

I currently use milkshape 3D and UV Mapper. However, it would kinda be a big pain to just have a whole 1 MB pic for just a model and pain the whole thing. Like this model below here:

The texture map for this model was approx. 2 MB long.

I tried anim8or and UV mapping there didn't work. I'll try milkshape next.

well normally I texture on a bitmap of 1024x1024 which usually takes up around 5mb, plus 35mb within photo/paintshop

but thats just for creating, adding painstating detail - then its all shrunk to oftenly 256x256 and almost all that detail goes
but its a point to note, should work on larger maps and then scale down to your needs ... and they tend to gain some nice neatness around the edges as it blends pixels when you shrink.

remember it isn't the UVmapper which changes the size of them but the actual detail you decide to do. Whenever possible try to put the areas of the model which need to look identical to each other overlapping, this saves considerable space
