Rapture was first built shortly after WW2, and the civil war began on New Year's Eve, 1959, if I remember correctly.

says that Columbia was built in 1900. And, while I'm not entirely sure where the 1912 timeline came from originally, it pops up everywhere (for example, here and here and here) so I assume that's where it's set.

It keeps going further and further back and yet weirdly more and more advanced. What's next, a space city in the 1600s?

On the other hand I love Bioshock. I think Bioshock may have had some of the best storytelling in any game I've played, maybe Mass Effect and Half Life as well.

I think they're trying to nail the patriotic FEELING that was present during the time period, rather than shove America down your throat. And if I know Bioshock, they will show how this patriotic can-do city-in-the-sky endeavor goes wrong. Horribly, horribly wrong.

Actually, it's possible that building an underwater city is far more difficult than a floating city. With a floating city you just need lots of hot air or bouyant gases and some big balloons. (I'm simplifying, but that is the basic principle. If you take a land city and attach enough hot-air balloons then it'll basically work.) Whereas, if you build an underwater city, it's not just a case of taking a land city and sticking it in the sea: the immense pressure from the water and the movement of the seabed mean that there are many, many difficulties to overcome, and if you mess even one of them up then your city will rupture and the ocean will crush it to bits.

From listening to the OXM report on XLBA it sounds like this Bioshock isn't set in the same universe, but is something separate that was being developed whilst somebody else worked on Bioshock 2. Taking the same concept, but doing something else with it. Assuming I was listening properly.

The game is being made by an American company, so they can make it as patriotic as they want. If this is supposed to take place in some form of America, what's the big deal? You are all expecting it to be a made up country somewhere? Well, hate to be blunt, but you're not the one's who are writing the fiction for this story.

I too am kind of sick of the COD patriotism in the games... but again, they're made by two American companies, so they made them like Jerry Bruckheimer films. So?

HAHA, i don't know why everyone is so hard up on the teaser, Kevin even said it may change from now til the game comes out. I remember Ken saying that the Big Daddy was a major part of the franchise, so they just couldn't leave it out. That's why they created that big guy in a diving suit to make people see it and instantly think "Bioshock", but that doesn't make it a big daddy, it just resembles the Bioshock franchise.

Actually, although the BD is definitely iconic, one thing that Levine is pretty firm on is the fact that "there are no sacred cows" as regards Bx: when they were designing Bx:I they decided that anything which they kept from the original Bx they'd keep not for nostalgia's sake but because they couldn't do without it. So the BDs and LSs and, of course, Rapture - all of which are the most iconic parts of the original Bx - have been left out.

Yeah, it's obviously showcasing what the devs want to show us. For example, the player presumably can't die in the demo because it would mess up the presentation.

But at least it gives us an idea of what it would be like to play. I particularly like the way that Booker and Elizabeth interact by talking to each other and working together; it adds depth to their characters and makes the story more involving. Of course, all this is probably all scripted so they probably won't talk during gameplay but at least the writers have a flair for making us care about these characters.

Hmmm... I still don't really care for the characters. It takes a LOT of work to make me feel for any video game story, as they're mostly all crap, generic and predictable.

Game-makers are trying to find ways of blending game-play and cinematics, its an excellent way of making the gaming experience more interesting, I imagine the parts you were talking of were mostly gameplay

Well, the gameplay looks fun. But I can't take that girl seriously. She looks a bit too "cartoonish" to me. The setting definately has that sense of awe that Rapture had, though it got a little disorienting at times.

I wasn't really feeling it. I like the character design, but the girl's voice was killing me. She was doing that thing that female news anchors do here in the US, where they lower the pitch of their voice to sound more "serious". Grates on my nerves, just use your natural feminine voice!

I don't like the fact the character talks... It sounds really sarcastic and cheesy all the time at the same time. I know it isn't in the dark and gloomy, plumber's nightmare of Rapture, but just because it isn't so dark and gloomy any more doesn't make a person's voice go all cheesy and sarcastic.lol I still think however despite my hate for really sarcastic and cheesy American accents, I think Bioshock Infinite will be a amazing game, it is so far starting to look like one of the most appealing, I just hope game-play lives up to the amazing surroundings.

I'd actually say it looks pretty freaking amazing. Looks like it's going to be awesome. There's the classic franchises: Warcraft, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Onimusha, Zelda, Prince of Persia, Megaman, etc... and Bioshock will soon be one of the most beloved franchises in history, with all those games.
