I found this more interesting than alarming, but apparently there's a new superbacteria going around which is immune to most antibiotics.

A small snippet:
Quote: "NDM-1 (or New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase) is a gene mutation that arms many common and harmful bacteria like E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae with a resistance that can even withstand carbapenems, the antibiotics used as a last resort when more common drugs have no effect. What's worse, the gene has been found on plasmids -- particularly promiscuous bits of mobile DNA that can move easily between strains of bacteria."

I'm less worried about it than I am curious what they'll do to remedy the problem. What do you all think?

Let us all die.

Not really, but this doesn't scare me either. Every day I wear a +5 Ring of Immune System, so I never get sick.

No really though, there have been many things said to be impossible to fix that have been dealt with.

GO SCIENCE!

Well, let's hope they'll find something because ... I don't want to die! Bwèèèèhèèhèèèèèèèèèè!
I wanna keep on playing metalriffs on my guitar, and get my game published on the netbook and make lots of money to buy me a new guitar and amplifier, and keep on playing metalriffs on my new guitar, and create a new game to publish so that I can buy me a new guitar for when my old guitar has become 'old'...! Bwèèèèhèèhèèèèèèèèèè!

Not sure it's a good idea to inject yourself with a disinfectant.

We could just...

...not let it spread.

That'd stop it. xD - And that way we wouldn't need to find a way to deal with it when it's a problem.

That's like flying into an asteroid field and going "Right, now we need to get rid of these asteroids, because they'll hit us." - You could have just, not flown into it in the first place.

Then we need to change our foreign/foreign visitor policy.
or... inject-a-nuke?
We could spray H2O2 or alcohol on everything!
We could make several human sacrifices to appease it.
...or goats.

One of the reasons superbacteria spread is the level of hygiene in hospitals, at least in the UK, is that they're not cleaned properly, some hospitals in the UK have disgusting standards and it's down to the cleaning staff, they need to be trained better, because you don't clean a hospital in the same way you can clean a hospital, your job has to be a lot more thorough, and it was back when a relative worked as a cleaner in a hospital. There also needs to be an accountable measure for if a member of staff hasn't done the job properly. I wouldn't say cleaning staff are under paid, after all, they can earn £10+ an hour, when I worked as a cleaner in a care home, I got £7 an hour and that was considered a decent rate, but we had the responsibility to not allow germs to spread too.

Our local hospital sometimes recommend people go home earlir than they ought because they're probably going to be safer at home than in hospital because of superbacteria, which is ridiculous. If they trained their cleaners to do the job right, then it'd be a lot more hygienic to stay. Anti-biotics might not be able to help you, but clean the surfaces people come in to contact with properly, then you can prevent it.

Alternatively, make an edible form of Dettol?

Or instead of what NeuroFuzzy has said, how about a virgin sacrifice? I hear the almighty Satan prefers those to goats (or Santa, I get the two mixed up).

My argument is that people need bad bacteria to an extent, just to build their immune systems - people who grow up in a strongly sanitized environment are going to find it more difficult to combat strong illnesses.

However, that doesn't mean "don't wash", because for goodness sakes, consider the rest of us!

But, I'll only support your idea Laz, if it'll eliminate my competition, after all, I am going to rule the world one day.

Mix it in with a little chilli sauce and green pepper paste - delicious...

Alternatively, give yourself alcohol poisoning to cleanse your blood vessels - and your stomach.

Just claim every death caused by the disease to be a sacrifice towards preventing it....then again...that might just make it spread faster?

This is just one of those things that was bound to happen sooner or later. Its just natural selection in its purest form.

I'm sure I read news stories years ago warning that Doctors should stop over-prescribing antibiotics, because:

A. Our bodies won't develop any natural immunities to any new forms of the Bacteria
B. If a new form of bacteria survives because its mutation makes it immune to antibiotics, it will thrive in an environment that solely relies on antibiotics to combat any form of bacteria related illness.

Its the reason why there is no cure for the common cold. The virus mutates so fast and spreads so quickly, that any form of vaccination is completely pointless (Hence why you have to get "update" Flu jabs if you need them)

Well, it's rather early to say, but a Belgian (yaay, Belgium! ) company that makes cleaning products (which contains probiotics, a substance you also find in yoghurt) claims that they have the solution to eliminate the new 'superbacteria'. Their products also helped in the fight against the hospital bacteria MRSA. So, there's still hope.

Can't agree more! The state of some of our hospitals is unbelievable. Usually due to being overstretched, poorly managed and under paid. It doesn't help that the real cost of world class health care is far greater than any country can afford.

This is all over my head.

But from what I understand it seems awesome, but kind of frightening. I'm sure we can pull something off that will stop it.

It's comin' right for us!

Every time I hear about a new strand of deadly flu or superbacteria I feel a strange sadness when we kill it off. Billions of years ago we probably started out like one of these superbacteria, think of the possibilities that this bacteria has ahead of it, what it could become in millions of years.
Screw it! We got here first!
