I brought Music Maker and got it today, i was using it when all of the sudden i went......MMM this sort of sucks.
I mean not only do most of the .wav files blow but you cannot use it if you want to sell your game.
So I think Cubase would be better or.
If you are an expert, tell me what is best for me.
I want to create music that will:
Play character attacking sound like when the sword hit's the enemy.
Sort of like slow, emotion, Final Fantasy 10 sound for the background.

MMM can you help?

My game will make sure Final Fantasy will never be forgotten.
Remember me because my game will be in the shops in a year or 2.

AHH man come on - i need something better than that like:
Play character attacking sound like when the sword hit's the enemy.
Sort of like slow, emotion, Final Fantasy 10 sound for the background.

Also a sound thing that play's fighting sounds.
Is there anything...Anything??

My game will make sure Final Fantasy will never be forgotten.

Have you tried the free WAV sites for your samples? It's pretty easy to mix a track on the fly by playing several sounds. That way you'll get a more natural, random sound track. You can also adjust the volume and speed of each one to create "infinite" variations.

if you have a good Sound card go Gigastudio 124, crappy sound card go Fruity loops, if you have no musical knowlegde go Acid 4.0, and if you play guitar and have a Sound board, good sound card, and plenty cords then Go Sonar 3.

If you know music notation then i'd suggest Melody Assistant, it's cheap (10 euros) and very powerful, and exports to mp3 / midi / wav.

check out the link... it's where one of the devs spills the beans on all the audio tools they use...
http://www.3dactionplanet.com/thief/features/interviews/brandon/

Quote:
"TUG: An artist is only as good as his tools, so what tools do you use on the job? How do you get your samples n' such?

Brandon: Tools... good question. I use some form of multitracking software.. just now its Nuendo. Sound Forge of course is used by us as well as almost everyone else with a PC workstation. Samples aren't so much an issue now as instruments, which are collections of samples to form a cool sound. Our latest library is the Miroslav Vitous Orchestra."

YES he edits the sounds after they are recorded in sound forge and records them in Nuendo(nice lil program thats up and coming)... I am guessing you have never used sound forge???

Well i use it on every song i create in Sonar( as it can run in conjucnction with sonar.)

Bassiclly alot of people use sound forge for editing and making they're products sound good and clean, and they use programs like Sonar, Nuendo and Cubase to record them.

Get a decent microphone and record the sounds yourself, then use any editing software to clean them up, slow them down mix them etc - CoolEdit is a pretty decent sample editor.

You'd be surprised how many game sound effects are made with a strange mouth noise - lightly blow on a microphone then play back at a lower speed, you have an explosion - tap 2 metal knifes together then add reverb and slow it down a little, swords. Be creative dude, sound effects generators are usually disapointing, sound too mechanical, and are nightmares to use.

Hey people - look this is what type of music i want.
I dont want any beats to it, if you have played Final Fantasy 10 - i am looking for music like that, i mean like the sound is soft, emotional at some places.
Music Maker - hasn't got anything (but it does have a piano plus how many cds does it come with? i had only 3 but is there a 4th?)

Fruity Loops - actually not bad if you want to make a full action game.

So come on, i am after music like Final Fantasy - any one know a music place to make this type of music?

Umm... Final Fantasy's composer is Nobuo Utematsu and he's been composing video game music for over 15 years, kinda hard to get that knida talent for free or in a program. I think you need to talk to Grim_Reaper or Fallout, they do some great stuff. I can't remember what program they use but I think Grim's costs upwards of $5000, but it's what they use in movies, kinda like the Maya or Max of the music industry.

I wouldnt have the first clue how to make a decent fantasy style tune. Tried before, and only come up with fairly bog standard stuff. Dont have the samples, or the experience. Grim can knock up something pretty good though.

You can always get yourself some acoustic sample CDs, which will give the sampled riffs to piece together. The entire sound track in Severence is made from samples from the Symphonic Adventures sample CD, so it can be done.

But Andrew, Grim writes music for money. You'll have to either pay him or have a really fit sister over the age of concent, else he probably won't do anything for you. Even if I could write fantasy music, I wouldn't do it for free, cos it just takes far too much time and effort to bust something out for a "thank" and your name in credits.

Sample CDs. Or actually, get the game finished, wow people with its splendour, and then they'll probably want to get their choons in it.

You need some music experience first. If you have then it's easy to create a soopthing tune:

create a couple of staves, make them something nice like strings. Place some semibrieves in one, then maybe a slightly faster tune in the other. Very simple, but it's a start.

oh, didn't know you wanted to make it yourself heh. Well I'm afraid I cant help ya then, as my job is to write music for games/film. If you want to make Final Fantasy type music(and still have its quality) its gonna take 3 things:

1. Lots of money:
Nobuo Uematsu, the composer for the Final Fantasy games, is a professional who has an entire studio dedicated to his music production. From Keyboard and Rack-mount Synthesizers to software samplers to mixing consoles. A BASIC and decent(with the emphasis on basic) home studio setup will cost you well over 5 grand.

I can't find a decent picture of Nobuo's studio, but I can assure you it looks something like this(Hans Zimmer's studio)

http://www.mediaventures.com/images/fisheye.jpg

2. Lots of knowlege in music theory and music production
You can't expect to use pre-made loops and get Final Fantasy type results. You will have to write out your compositions note by note and know exactly what you are doing when mixing and mastering to acheive the best and most original results.

3. Patience
Music is not an easy hobby to have. It takes a LOT of time, practice, and effort to get good at it. Its like programming, you cant expect to just buy a copy of DBP or some other engine with little or no experience and make the next big game. The same goes for music, you cant expect to make music with the quality of Final Fantasy when you are just starting out.

I'm not trying to push your hopes down or anything, Im just warning you of what you are in for if you are hoping to make Final Fantasy quality music right off the bat.

If it's plinky plonky fantasy music without too much bass or drums, how about plain old .mid MIDI songs - they sound pretty retro, but they are perfect for fantasy songs because they have such a synthy feel to them. Do a google search for '.mid fantasy' and check out some of the stuff - I found some amazing sounding fantasy .mids yesterday from an industry vet, free for use with credit as well, so you could just nab some .mids from his site and thank him with a nice credit screen - Unfortunately I don't have the link, I'll post it tonight though.

At the end of the day though, if you wan't to make fantasy music, there's a million ways to do it with any music software, it's all a matter of what programs you feel creative when using - you will need to compose however, don't sit with E-Jay or Fruity Loops trying to make original music, they're really more designed for remixes. Might not be a bad idea to hunt for Music2000 - it's like a graphical music tracker, notes are shown as bars on a virtual piano keyboard, you have a plethora of premade sections, and you simply lay sections out on a grid. I found it incredibly good fun on the PSX - the PC version has .wav output etc. The important thing is that it's a propper music creation tool that's easy to use and is damn cheap - you'd only pay about $10 for it these days.
