Greetings everyone,
Over the last few days, I decided to beef up my PC for my return to uni in september. After 3 days of building, I'm pretty pleased with what Iv'e come up with.

Specs
CPU:AMD Phenom II 555 Black Edition OC'd to 3.7Ghz
Mobo: Gigabyte MA78G-DS3H S Series
RAM:2GB DDR2 Black Dragon @ 4-4-4-12 (Currently running 32Bit OS so I cannot use my 4GB at the moment)
GPU:ATI 5970 2GB
HDD:160GB Western Digital Caviar Blue
Cooling:: OCZ Vendetta CPU cooler
Case:: Antec 900 Ultimate gaming case

CPU Temps
Idle:28C
100% Load for 5 hours in Prime 95:37C

I still have plenty of headroom to push my overclock higher, but I'm wondering if 3.9Ghz is an overkill.

Anyway, feel free to post your opinions, thoughts or own spec on the thread.

Lol seriously,160gb HDD? Well I have one too but my pc has been a lot cheaper. The GPU is a bit overkill tho. I would rather buy GTX460/470 and invest into Core i7.

My spec:

AMD Athlon X2 250 @ 3,5ghz (3ghz stock)
Gigabyte Radeon 4770 1gb @ 850/830
2gb DDR2 Kingston RAM
160gb WD Caviar Blue
Xigmatek Asgard case

I'm jealous. My pc is WEAK compared to that

my current specs are:
CPU:Intel Core2Duo @2.33 GHz (plan to get some better cooling and overclock it as much as I can, though I might just get a faster processor and OC that instead)
RAM:3GB DDR2 (I don't know the brand though) It's got extra heatsinks it though so I might see if I can OC that as well.
GPU:ATI Radeon HD 4550 512MB. I'm going to upgrade it to a couple of crossfired graphics cards (I'm looking at a couple of £250 ones, but I doubt I'll get them lol)
HDD:500GB SATA. (I don't know the speed or brand, I can remember it was a big brand but I ripped it out of an external HD)
Cooling: just some fans that came with it.
Case: some generic cheap one my dad got because it came free with a PSU.
Motherboard: Foxconn 975X7AB

It's quite good for the mere £200 I paid for it though

(I can't edit for some reason, so sorry for the double post)
Also, I have a dual monitor set up, I plan to up it to 3 or 4, maybe up to 6 if I can afford it though.

And my current set up is weak compared to that.

2.0 ghz Intel Pentium 4
RAM: 1GB - was originally 256mb
Card: 128mb G-Force FX 5200
HDD: 75gb
This thing is 8 years old, I can't remember how much it cost back then.

My laptop however, which is dead was:

Intel Core Duo 2 1.8 ghz
4GB RAM
512mb GeforceM 9500
250gb HDD

It is 2 years old and was £700 when I bought it.

So I must say, sexy machine CoZ.

I know the feeling sepp' i had our first pc for about 9 years and only upgraded two years ago to a half decent setup, and now in july since i have money i went for a render farm setup for uni.
//

Quick question, I thought 32/84bit could use a maximum of 4gb of ram before a need of a 64bit OS?

My stats;
Names arent spelt right at all lol

19.2gz processer ( Amd phenom X6 1055gt ) OC'd with leeway to 21Gz

2gb Ram crossair ddr3 (whatever hzt matchs the motherboard)

Ati raedon vapor-x saphire 1gb 5570? i think

Formula crossair Iv mobo

Scythe mugen cpu cooler

Antec 900 (updated ver with cable latchs ect)

Kindly helped by charger bandit when i was selecting parts

It generaes a coldspace at about 60% cpu and 1.5gb mem usage where its colder than room temp. Fans set @ speed 2 bar the top @ 3. Overall lovely rig.

I did. In both shots, Anti-aliasing was set to X8. I also enabled the maximum amount of transparency anti-aliasing also. It just seems that some games still appear jaggy no matter what. BF Bad company is horribly optimised for PC (like most console ports) and is stupidly taxing [biggest resource hog next to Far Cry 2 which also runs poorly)

@Uncle Sam: Very nice

Only 2GB or RAM that shocked me seeing the specs for other areas. Nice graphics card though better than what I'm running at the moment.

Anyway my Setup:
OS: Windows 7 64bit
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8Ghz
RAM: 4GB DDR3
Graphics Cards: Dual nvidia SLI 9800GT 1GB (technically i have two but a few weeks ago one of them just stopped working I'm now down to one as i haven't had time to look into why its not working)
Hard Drive: 1.5TB Hard disk (1xTB drive and 1x500GB Drive)

I've built that up over a long time and motherboards have changed. Bits have been switched. I've had 3 cases and gone through an amazing 6 mice this year alone. I just don't know how i do it but they all die. Next thing to update is the Processor with the amount of gaming i do and the insane multi-tasking i do the processor is the main thing that needs a upgrade.

@The Next: Nice setup. In terms of the RAM, I'm dying to get my hands on a 64bit OS, but I don't have the money at the moment to go buying a 64 bit version of Windows 7. Further more, I don't really fancy formatting my HDD, although I am slightly gutted that I have 2GB of RAM just sitting in a box doing nothing for the time being.

Buying Windows will get you both the 32\64 bit versions.

My system sucks:

Pentium D 3.0GHz
2GB DDR2 667MHz RAM
GeForce 6800GS
X-Fi Extreme Gamer (about the only good part I have)

I really need a new processor and RAM. My PC hangs when working in FL Studio, and loading\installing software takes waaay too long.

I'm looking into buying a new system pretty soon, and it's going to be AMD\ATI for the first time. I hope that I pick compatible parts.

You can get a pretty good system for $330:

Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0GHz Quad-Core
Motherboard: BIOSTAR TA880GB+
RAM: 4GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
GFX Card: XFX Radeon HD 5670 1GB DX11

I have:

Intel Core 2 duo E8400 @ 3.0 GHz
MSI P7N 750 nforce mainboard
2GB DDR2 800 RAM
dual (2) XFX Nvidia Geforce 9800gt's in SLI
seagate 160GB harddrive (I'm running out of room ...)
Windows XP

I can run:

Mirror's edge, max everything, 16X AF/AA/no PhysX @ 60fps constant.
Left 4 Dead, max everything, 16X AF/AA @ or above 60
Crysis, max everything, 8xAF/4XAA @ an average of 40 (I don't have crysis anymore though. I uninstalled it as it started causing me problems)

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
3326MB RAM
Wondows Vista

I just "copied and pasted" from the dxdiag thingy, so... sorry is it's messy or something...

But I quess it's screenie time. I run them at full settings:

@Metal Devil123: Nice screenshots. Here is one of my favourite scenes from dead space. (Taken with: 8xAA, 16xAA, Vsync on (capped at 75fps)

@heyufool1: Since you own a phenom II processor, this question is relevent to you. Did you find that you had to set the CPU voltage manually in the BIOS rather than leave it at "auto"? I found that when at 3.6Ghz and set to "normal" setting in bios which was 3.25, my CPU froze on me at the end of a 4 hour gaming session. The temps were fine where only 40C under 100% load which indicated a lack of voltage. I then bumped the voltage up to 3.5V in the BIOS which is a tad above stock, and everything seems stable so far, so I pushed it to 3.7Ghz and havent had any problems. It is worth noting that I'm on the stock cooler until tuesday (I need install my OCZ vendetta HSF), so a max temp of 39/40C under load on stock cooling is pretty good. I just found it unusual that the "normal/auto" setting in the bios would set the voltage at something under the stock requirement; although I suppose if OC'ing, you have to apply a fixed level of votage yourself rather than allowing the voltage to fluctuate as per the auto setting.

Yeh if you buy Windows 7 you will get 32bit and 64bit included if you didn't you should complain as Microsoft made a real effort this time to give everyone both copies.

It can be hard with money to get everything you want i have a bit of spare cash laying about but I'm going to buy a Intel i7 Processor so I'm at the top of progress and that will last me a long time. Unfortunately i don't quite have enough money to spend on that yet will be nice when I've paid off everything i owe at the moment and can buy it.

Oh and formatting drives is my nightmare out of my 1.5TB i am using 78% of it. Not all for personal use some is backups from my servers and work stuff but to store that while i format a drive is total hell.

Ummm yea sorry I have no clue I don't do any overclocking or anything that alters the cpu settings. Literally, all I did when I put my computer together was take the CPU out of the box put in the mobo and that's it. Sorry I couldn't be any help.

IMO, you shouldn't overclock for the hell of it. Only push your PC that extra step if what you've currently got struggles to do what you want. If it already runs everything perfectly, why make your PC un-necissarrily warm and unstable?

Oh know i dropped it back down after i tested it who on earth would need 21-22ghz machine. The performance bottle necks because of the ram anyway so there'd be no point unless i wanted to save that extra few seconds rendering

Mines not pretty inside a long as it does all i need it too i don't care about the looks i add new things in so often i gave up trying to keep it tidy and looking nice.

CPU: 2.8mhz (that is pretty good considering how old this thing is)
System Temp: 28c
CPU Temp: 90c (waaah!)

New Specs:-
RAM: 512mb
HDD: 80GB
CPU: 2.8mhz (that is pretty good considering how old this thing is)
System Temp: 23c
CPU Temp: 62c (cleaning the fan and heatsink saves lives)

I now call it THE BEAST

I only cleaned the fan because Linux kept complaining it was too hot. Windows has a much more British attitude: it wont say anything and will just die of heatstroke because it doesn't want to be any bother.

90c is kind of crazy, I could have been cooking my dinner on that!

also maybe find a better heatsink. i dont know if you think its worth it but it was one of my hobbies to upgrade old systems as much as i can. also 60 is still kinda high, you can get it down to 30 with good heatsink fan and thermal paste. also pay attention to the small stuff like airflow, (tie up the wires so they dont get in the way) small stuff like that adds up so a somewhat noticable difference

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them
