Well, I hope my problem can be solved in a simple matter. Basically what I want to do is cripple the derivative, limit, and solve functions so they don't work. I really would prefer to be able to just change the names. My problem is that I have a calc teacher this year who is against the TI 89 because it has those three functions. I don't have the money to get a new calculator, nor do I want another one. I was just looking for some help on this topic.

I have downloaded ti connect and can get into the calculator but I don't know what to do to get what I'm looking for done.

Well, if I **just** crippled them it would be alright with the teacher. I still want to know how to I could do this and I also need to keep the code in tact somewhere on my computer so I don't ruin it. My teacher said it was fine if I made the functions not work.

I have a TI-89, but I'm not an expert.

If your teacher is going to be that cantankerous about it, I say lie to her. Say you disabled them, but really just define X, Y, Z, A, B, etc. to values that will screw up the functions and make it report 0 or some other nonsense number. Even if you backup the ROM on your computer, it seems like it'd be unnecessarily destructive to override the built in functions.

Prove your merit by also writing down every single step to your integrations and derivations so she knows that you are indeed working it out on your own. Explain to her that you got the TI-89 intending it to last a while, and that you can't afford to pick up an 84/83 right now. If she still complains, talk to your school board or principal about it. It's not worth the potential damage to your calculator, and Teachers are not able to get away with that crap anymore. As it should be.

Sorry Lemonade, but I'm a pragmatist. What would you suggest he do? Solve all the calculator-based problems by hand? Ideally, as heyufool1 mentioned, the teacher would get over themselves and trust the students.

Also note the beginning of my second paragraph in that post.

Does your teacher know that functions like that are pretty much standard on every graphing calculator these days? I have a TI-83, and even that can do things like calculate integrals and solve for basic equations. Not to mention all the functionality you can add yourself into ANY programmable calculator.

Why not just get a non-graphical scientific calculator?

They cost £10.
