Geek Culture / Reinstalling Windows 7 over Ubuntu?

Well crap. I'm eating my words here (to those of you who have been following my blog), but it's kind of necessary.

Recently, I completely wiped Windows 7 off of my HP laptop and installed Ubuntu as a single OS. While I love Ubuntu and know that Linux works better on this computer than Windows ever did, well, there are a couple of things I NEED that only run on Windows.

The main thing I need desperately right now is video editing capability. Ubuntu's support for digital video SUCKS. I've looked into it and have found no editing program that offers the features I need.

I also miss programming in DBPro and being able to run programs made by fellow TGC users.

So my question is this....

Can I reinstall Windows 7 on this laptop without having to contact Microsoft? I managed to write down the product ID key, serial key and CD key, so when I try to reinstall Windows I should just be able to enter those numbers in, right? Or will it just plum not work?

I really hope I don't have to contact Microsoft. I hate sitting on the phone for four hours trying to get help through customer support of any kind. And if I need the receipt for the computer as well, well, I'm outta luck because I lost that months ago. I really hope I didn't screw myself here.

Anybody got any advice?

it will work, if u have the details it asks for then just plop the CD in, providing ur system is set up to read the CD first (if not just go into the BIOS and change the boot order so the CD is at the top, if u need help doing that just tell me)

If u havnt got the CD, then make sure it isnt in the box that came with ur pc (providing u didnt build it urself) because they should provide it, if they dont u can usually ring them up and request that they send you their copy.

I have never only had Ubtuntu on my PC.
All you gota do is, after inserting the CD turn on your computer, if it then goes into ubtuntu then your boot order is wrong, if it starts the windows instillation then just follow the onscreen instructions.

Generally modern pcs already have CDs at #1 in the bootorder (instead of floppy disks), so it should just load the installer, it starts to load just after the POST.

I dunno bout 7 but i know for sure with vista/xp that it takes ages to install(1 hour or so to me is ages), so u should probably start it and leave it running when your doing something else.

Most DBPro games can run in WINE, also, if its a fairly basic video editing program it should also work in WINE. No need for windows at all

BASIC programmers never die, they GOSUB and don't RETURN.

Yeah, but it'd probably run better and with 100% everything compatible and working.

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

I have heard good stuff about a video editor called Cinelerra on linux. Also a possibility you might consider would be a virtual machine?. That way you could run windows inside ubuntu.

I've heard about Cinelerra as well. I'm hoping to try it out this Winter (no access to my desktop which has Ubuntu Studio on it while I'm at school).

CoffeeCoder, are you going to dual boot?

Yes, I'm going to dual-boot, but I'm going to wait until Maverick Meerkat (10.10) comes out in October before I do that.

I've heard good things about Cinelerra as well, but I need software that has a lot more to offer (I'm a fan of the Sony Vegas line of software and it's only made for Windows). I will definitely check it out in the future though.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll be able to reinstall Windows this afternoon, but this evening is a possibility. We'll see.

You shouldn't need any applications to dual boot? Just pop in the disc, boot with it and install Win 7 to a second HDD or partition.

But he'll need a bootloader that's willing to share between windows and ubuntu. Windows is the OS equivalent to the nazi's.

Who said anything about that...?

I know I don't need any applications to dual boot. I've done it in the past successfully and am very familiar with the process. That's why I'm going to do it again in October with Maverick Meerkat (the next version of Ubuntu).

Anyway, I got Windows reinstalled; it didn't even ask me for the serial/CD keys, so I'm guessing it's all embedded in the CDs and such. I'm not getting any pop-ups asking me to register Windows either, so I'm good.

Now I just need to uninstall of the bloatware and junk that I don't need.

My afternoon got freed up again, which is why I was able to do this. Took just over two hours. Oh well. At least it's done!

It says Windows is activated completely. That makes me happy.
