So I'm looking into maybe buying a smart phone for the first time, but I want to get one without a data plan (wi-fi is enough for me). I did some research, and discovered that to get a phone without a data plan you need to buy it unlocked (correct?).

What's a good store to buy new\refurbed unlocked phones? Also, how easy is it to get an unlocked phone to work with a carrier such as Sprint or T-Mobile when I don't buy it from their store?

Edit: Oh yeah, and I'm looking at Android phones.

It's not too hard to get iPhone to work on TMobile, that's what I use and I don't have a data plan either so the lack of 3G isn't an issue for me with it.

I've heard good things about the Galaxy phones, might check ebay. I know TMobile isn't going to care if you buy a data plan or not, no contracts either. Sprint I don't know about, but when shopping keep in mind Spring uses CDMA and TMobile is GSM.

My rooted HTC Dream is still running beautifully (Froyo 2.2) on 3 after I unlocked it. You'll need WiFi to get it configured correctly the first time (to link it to your Google account, sync contacts etc.) and then from there on you can use it as you would a normal phone without the Data transfer.

Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Wave and Motorola Milestone (both models), I've read good things about. When flicking through all of the reviews, I would have chosen the Wave. The Galaxy is suppose to be really nice, but the review I read marked it down because they found it sometimes lagged. I don't like laggy things, so it was enough for me to want the Wave instead, both are meant to be really good. I've now decided not to buy one - my Motorola RAZR serves me well, and the new iPod Touch has all of the features I was looking for in an Android phone (and it's cheaper), I need a new iPod, not a new phone, so that's why I decided to change my mind.
