On the TGC Facebook page we post an update called "The Big Monday Question" and I thought it would be good to have a forum thread on this too!

So, who is your favourite end of level boss and why!?

Out of all the games I've played, the one from Banjo-Kazooie seems to come up right away. Classic game!
I'm sure there's other favs I have, too, just need to think of them.

Albert Wesker from Resident Evil 5. Near the end before the volcano battle within the ship. That will be mine since what I was going to say isn't really a "Boss".

What about mini-bosses? Like the Tank from Left 4 Dead? Does that count?

Ridley from the Metroid Series.

Oh wait, I have to get back at Metroid Other M RIGHT NOW!
(Best game of this year in my opinion.)

Now the plot thickens, the fps decreases, and the awesomeness goes through the roof.

I've still not beaten them. I tried Emerald Weapon recently and he really isn't a friendly guy. First you realise you need the underwater materia, then I learned the hard way that you need final attack and to attach it to 'life' or 'Phoenix' materia, in other words, I dealt a lot of damage off of him and by my calculations I wasn't far off from beating him. Then he unleashes the attack that kills all of your characters, regardless of stats. With final attack equipped, your characters are still rendered weak and he insists on offering a barrage of attacks soon after. I think it stands pretty strong in my head too.

For humour - I suppose the greatest boss is the Mighty Poo in Conker's Bad Fur Day. Epic

For difficulty and a-holishness - Emerald Weapon and Ruby Weapon in FFVIII

I'll probably come back with more if I think of any. I've got myself a copy of Ninja Gaiden 2, and so far I've found it rating high in difficulty for bosses - heck, I'm stuck on the boss at the end of level 2...this isn't good for my credibility as a gamer.

I know everybody hates the end-of-game boss on bioshock, and it is pretty easy, but to them for actually BOTHERING to put the most exciting part of games back in after forever without them, (few exceptions, doom3/hl)

(and those countless mario games, but come on, die already, it was good for five years, but let him die)

I know people who still love Mario. Though Bowzer really ought to give up the ghost, he ought to know he's not going to win.

I found a hellish boss in The Last Remnant - I don't hear of many people playing it, but at the end of the first disk you have a boss called 'Gates of Hell' and for me, it ranks as one of the hardest bosses I've ever faced. The PC version I think is a little more forgiving as there are fewer restrictions on your units (plus, you can download a trainer if you want to level the playing field).

This boss after the first 4 rounds will start to attack, and when he does, he'll attack once per unit attack (I usually have 3 units of 5 members) and that includes the remnant unit you get at the start of the battle (cyclops), so that's 4 attacks per round (most enemy units will only attack once per round, the previous boss attacks 1 or 2 times per round)...sometimes more, so it's more tricky if you haven't killed of the Gates of Hell's friends before he starts attacking. His attacks can take off 1/4 of a unit's health, sometimes more. If he successfully kills one of your units, he won't let you revive them, no, he'll do that for you and he'll possess them, they won't be weaker either, so it can easily end in the death of another unit. You might think, "just heal between rounds", the way in which the game functions, you can't always access your 'healing' abilities. Admittedly, I cheated on the PC version - just so I could remove the unit limitations (so I could have 5 units of 5 members), but on the XBox 360 version, I'm stuck.

So, I'd have to choose between Emerald Weapon and The Gates of Hell.

Nihilanth from Half-Life 1, not because it was a particularly good end of level boss, but simply because, after I completed the game 'legitimately' the first time round, I liked to go back and impulse 101 'nade spam into its head to kill it!!!!

I game therefore I am.

One of the bosses in FF-X, it was a big machine on an icy lake. I beat it once but my PS2 crashed, I tried again three or four times but couldn't beat it agian so I gave up. I was getting bored of the game anyway.

GTA IV is the only game I've recently played with bosses and they were all pretty forgettable.

mario is really still fun, i still play mario games on nintendo DS or wii, however THE BEST mario game is N64 mario ^^
nothing beats that mariogame.

mario galactic bla bla is tbh not that great, i was acually as diaappointed there as i was with zelda TP >__<'

speaking of zelda, the best and most enjoyable boss i've ever met is probably ganondorf/ganon in Zelda ocarina of time!

Maby that... or any other boss in Shadow of the Colossus... the final boss is the most amazing thing I've ever seen! SERIOUSLY! Wont post a picture thou, you can spoil the ending yourself... But it is THE FINAL BOSS! Awesomest thing ever.

And the most annoying final "boss" would be the striders in the end of Episode 2... almost, just almost, got to the low level of using console, but I didn't. BUt it wasn't so annoying in the bad way. When you get trought it, you fell like you're on the top of the world. Like the final boss in SotC. BUT WONT RUIN IT!

Seriously, it's just that awesome. And I bet, wichever colossi you are going to look up from the game, it will be AMAZING!

Glados is a good one! I'd say Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal 2(?) and Majora from Major's Mask.

Karnov, from Bad Dudes vs Dragoninja. Dunno why exactly, but it's good fun to kill him and he's pretty easy to beat.

I'd like to get Dead Rising 2 at some point. Or at least get the last of the Borderlands DLC and beat that.

Fortinbras from Onimusha Dawn of Dreams, in both his genma and human form, challenging and epic.

Final boss of Shadow of the Colossus. I mean, this guy is HUGE.

Or maybe the final boss from The Suffering and the final boss from The Suffering: Ties That Bind. It's not that they were huge or difficult, but because they were symbolic.

Rest in peace Heltor. God bless you.

Conker's Bad Fur Day probably had the most awesome bosses ever created, even if they were quite easy to beat. Banjo Kazooie also goes down in history... :3

I always enjoyed Queen Gohma from the Deku Tree in Zelda Ocarina of Time. Something about the simplicity of the fight was amazing.

the final boss in jedi knights academy (the dark side ending) was super hard but enjoyable. not gonna spoil anything but if you played the game you know who i am talking about. Also the final boss of the jedi outcast game was so extremeley easy i defeated him in 1 hit on the first try but i think i actually got really lucky

Andrew Ryan.

Also, SHODAN was a fantastic boss as a character, but whenever you fight her as an actual, end-of-game boss it just feels kind of arbitrary.

Shadows of te Empire had some of the coolest bosses ever. AT-ST, IG88, Boba Fett and his ship Slave 1, (my favorite level), the underwater monster thingy, the giant robot (hardest boss in the game i believe)

Hands down... Mass Effect 3.
Second is The Old Republic MMO. Although I'm not a huge MMO fan, I absolutely loved the KOTOR games and this MMO looks revolutionary. However, it could be another dead beat MMO like most are.
Gears of War 3 is next on the list.

Nothing comes close to Mass Effect 3 though! 2 is my favorite all time game. KOTOR 1 is my second favorite.

Signature's are stupid.

Minecraft
Portal 2
Mass Effect 3
Rage
Bioshock Infinite
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Next Episode of Starcraft 2
Alan Wake PC... I'm still hoping.
Half Life 2: Episode 3 - PLEASE !!!
Tomb Raider
Another Call of Duty - Seriously, did you see how many units they shipped with the last one. The popularity of these games is amazing, even if nothing being changed between them it's it pretty much just like Fifa where they update the graphics, add a few locations, new guns and improve some modes.
...

I might aswell stop there... cause the list goes on forever. But the point I want to make is, there a tons of triple A games being made, but Minecraft is still up there with them. Minecraft is a phenomenon. And because it is, your going to start seeing games copying it or even other version of the game. Could you imagine an Triple A version of Minecraft, it would be insane... let's just hope that never happens. I don't want consolized version of an already amazing game.
