My relatively new CD\DVD drive (ASUS DRW-24B1ST) smells like a burnt-out firework. I have taken it out and am letting the computer run to see if the smell was actually coming from the drive.

However, assuming it is the CD drive, does this necessarily mean it is going bad? I read online that burning certain CDs will make the drive smell burnt (who would have thought? ). The thing is, I haven't burned anything lately... At least (as far as I know) the drive is still functioning properly, but I'm worried about safety.

I bought the drive just a few months ago, so I am dubious if I will be able to return this thing to Newegg. It cost me about $20, so it's not that bad, just very annoying.

The worst thing that could happen that you would get a small puff from the drive and it would die. I would replace it.

Well, not quite. It could take out the PSU, start a fire, etc etc...

I'd say run it, if the smell is very strong, or it's hot to the touch, remove it and have it replaced by newegg or the manufacturer.

Well in a very very very rare case it could bust your PSU if the drive would short circuit very hardly.

It's not that rare, and it would make a component smell smokey or cause a fire. You shouldn't tell someone it won't happen because it can!
