My relatively new CD\DVD drive (ASUS DRW-24B1ST) smells like a burnt-out firework.

I have taken it out and am letting the computer run to see if the smell was actually coming from the drive.
However, assuming it is the CD drive, does this necessarily mean it is going bad? I read online that burning certain CDs will make the drive smell burnt (who would have thought?

). The thing is, I haven't burned anything lately... At least (as far as I know) the drive is still functioning properly, but I'm worried about safety.
I bought the drive just a few months ago, so I am dubious if I will be able to return this thing to Newegg. It cost me about $20, so it's not that bad, just very annoying.
