I'm planning to get myself an Ubisurfer netbook in about a month but I'm just wondering what kind of software I can run on it. As far as I know windows Mobile is based on Windows CE and all the information I've seen so far seems to point to Windows Mobile apps being compatible with Windows CE but I cant find a clear answer anywhere. All the apps targeted just for Windows CE seem to be outdated, is compatibility with Windows Mobile apps the reason why?

I just want to know as the Ubisurfer uses a custom version of Windows CE and has a Samsung brand ARM chip whether or not I can install Windows Mobile apps onto it or not.

If anyone could help I will be extremely grateful.

CE wont run any windows software or games, (i think), although there are some some sites out there that sell software and games for CE, but if you look about then you can get mini laptops that run standard windows for about the same price about the same size, personally i think thats a better option as you can run standard windows software.

- Wikipedia.

It groups them together as if they're the same thing... so maybe.

I'm not intending to run full Windows programmes with it, I'm just wondering if the Windows Mobile app's work since Windows Mobile is basically Windows CE but with extra software built on top of it.

I've thought about getting a laptop with standard windows or Linux on but the offer of the free years internet with this one is one of the main reasons I'm choosing it, I don't intend for it to replace my PC or my laptop I mainly want it for portable internet access but it would be nice if I could run the odd application on it.

Stuff such as DOS emulators would be good as they open the door for a lot more, even if the vast majority of software will be outdated.

Sorry to reply a little bit late but I thought I'd share my experience in case it helps anyone coming across this post.

PDosbox 1.1 (from Wall) works but with no sound support
Palmtop Spectrum Emulator (ARM CAB) works but with no 'O' key
PocketNestor works (this needs GAPI loaded) but you're stuck with a tiny screen.
MAMECE works but with frequent crashes !

With all the above some games work, some not.

Note that the UBI doesn't connect to a PC as Microsoft mobile device software expects a USB device (the UBI is a USB host) so you need to transfer the software as a CAB which WinCE can install or a WinCE exe via memory card oe USB stick.

Any updates gratefully received

There is very little that will work with windows ce. Even some of the mobile version of software will not work on windows ce laptops.

I have one found it very limited in what I could do with it, some don't even have flash for the browser.

There is no single site that sell apps for windows ce, but allot that sell for windows mobile which is different. I have games for windows mobile and I have mixed results in getting them to work.

I hope this help.

Strangely enough the UBI started off with linux as its OS and later switched. I'm not sure how a linux boot could work as a the boot code as well as a lot of the OS appears to be in ROM but I could easily be wrong

As an update to anyone interested I've found that the following (also available for free download) work:-
PocketNotepad, Copyright 2001 Tillanosoft, Version 2.1 Jan 31, 2001
PocketXpdf_0.5.0 (pdf reader)
efonvnc_v4.3_wce5x_armv4i (VNC server)
vncviewer

- the last 3 from Sourceforge.

The VNCViewer is an interesting example as this was written using the .net (v1.1) framework and runs just fine under Vista also.
