I was just wondering what ways people concentrate when working on something?

I find that a cool atmosphere (air conditioned room or windows open during night) helps a lot. A change in setting never disappoints (I dunno, but I get easily distracted if I've been coding/working in the same spot for too long (on the order of days). Also, sitting down with a cold glass of iced tea or coffee-based drink helps.

Listen to music, turn off the TV, and if I really need to concentrate and I don't need the internet, turn wireless off/disconnect ethernet to help stop the temptation.

For me it's always better to program late at night when everybody else is asleep. Late at night the land-line phone isn't ringing off the hook, there isn't anybody knocking on the front door, and I'm not getting any text messages on my cell. A cool glass of iced tea also helps me too.

I'd say DONT listen to music, it makes me distracted, not the opposite... Maybe in some cases however if the music was soothing and the volume is pretty low. Then it may have a positive working effect on me.

Have a normal sleep pattern helps.

Trying to do different tasks when you are working to mix things up a bit also helps i guess.

Programming or modeling wise, I usually try to envision the final product and as a result I become a excited to work on the project. Also on hot days I have iced tea, cold days I have tea, and in between I have sprite Nothing like have good food, drinks and programming all at once.

As some say a good sleep pattern can help, although I usually concentrate best at night when no one is around and the house is silent.

I personally find music very distracting unless it's some kind of slow atmospheric trance or something (which I don't often listen to).

If you have a TV in your room, keep it off. If you can't do that, put it in another room. If you find yourself spending too much time playing games either set yourself a schedule so you'll only play during certain hours or uninstall the games. The aim is to eliminate any potential distractions.

For me, it's more about distracting my brother, so he lets me work - instead of wanting to watch movies. The worst is the release of F1 2010, he just bought a fancy Thrustmaster steering wheel, so it's a constant whirr of actuators with those obnoxious F1 engine sounds...

So my overall answer is a big pair of noise cancelling headphones, chunky, high quality, and loud.

I think though, that there's more to it than just concentrating - often I can concentrate just fine but I'm just not in the mood. It's worst when there's a bug hiding somewhere, and I know that even if I'm adding something fun, sound effects, or whatever - I'll still have that bug to deal with. What do you guys do to make yourselves want to work, at those times when you really can't be bothered.

Buying a new ruled pad inspires me, having something decent to take notes on, a decent pen, and lots of gold blend are vital for me.

I usually fire a few shots into the air to clear the area of civilians.
I find music without words helps me concentrate (especially if the music fits the theme of what I'm trying to make) but if the music has words it really distracts me. It seems I can't listen to words and read words at the same time or my head explodes, luckily I have this fail-safe where I just stop coding.
Something else strange I noticed is that I can listen to words and do maths at the same time! So language and numbers must be completely independent in the brain. Anyone else notice these strange things?

If I keep getting side-tracked I've learned to just stop and go do something before coming back to coding or I'll never get anything done. I usually go for a run or do something physical.

Well, for me (and this may sound strange to some of you), I can concentrate much more when I listen to metalmusic (and the harder, the better). It makes me feel good and relaxed, and at the same time it inspires me. Even when I was younger and learning for school, metalmusic helped me to study.
But, what helps a lot too, is taking a break now and then. Even if it's just for five minutes. It happens sometimes that I can't find the bug, and then I take a break, do something completely different without thinking of the bug, and when I come back, it just pops in, sorta. You must give your mind some rest now and then. At least, that works for me.

Heres my way of solving bugs, firstly i get some paper. Then i become the program, running my through my code and recording variables and stuff on the paper and hopefully finding the bug. This becomes harder though the longer your code gets. For concentrating, i usually remove all distractions, if i need a computer ill turn off wifi and such. Though i am extremely bad at concentrating.

There's this group of kids at my school how group together in the morning, EVERY morning. ALL of them have either a can of Monster or Red Bull, and they're all a bunch of nobodies. It's quite sad really, you can tell they won't have much of a future.

Anyway I can only concentrate when it's cool, not cold, and when I'm relaxed. Drinks help, so long as I don't try and gulp them down extremely fast, because then I have to go into the kitchen to get another glass of something

Get someone near you to make constipation noises.

On a serious note.
I seem to be only able to properly program when either:
A.) No internet (and i cant put it back on)
B.) Get into programming, then i dont want to stop until i finish (which never happens, so i get bored and stop =p)
C.) If its revision, think how much i actually know about the exam, with the horrid realization that i only know about 15% of the questions, i start revising =p.
D.) Its the dead of night <Vampire Smiley>

Smoke me a kipper, ill be back for breakfast.

About a week ago I found a nice calendar program with event reminders and a To-Do list that stays on the desktop. Seeing the To-Do list all day long it constantly reminds me I need to get back to programming. The attached message is what I see right now on my desktop.

Here's the site if anybody is interested (there's a free version too):

What's gold blend? Coffee? hot chocolate? tea?

Also, that rainlendar (I dont like the name: its not even like smalendar or palendar) looks pretty good. I think I think about doing future things too much.
[edit]
Rainlendar is cool. An unintended feature is that it tells you if you've been up too late (at 12:00 it says if you have any events today )

Yeah. You could set an alarm that'll play if you go past 3:00am (see attached pic). I did manage to cross off "Add F1 to F10 command ability" but never got around to the 2nd watering of the tomato plant since my last post.

Back when i was in school we had energy drink dealers. What they do is buy a bunch of drinks in stock from the internet and sell them in schools. The teacherts caught on and then we had to be really sneaky about buying/selling energy drinks. But other than that these drink dealers had a very good veriety of energy drinks that cuoldnt be found in stores. like cocane energydrink (they banned it from sale but they still sold it on the internet. and BAWLS energy drink (lots of immature jokes about that name)cherry bawls was my favorite they didnt sell it in my town so i bough it from this guy. Good times

typing this up made me wanna drink some cool cherry BAWLS too bad they dont sell it here

I NEVER drink enrgy drinks... I used to drink evy now and then some years ago, but then I realized, they all taste like same and they all taste like crap... I don't like them at all.

But I listen to music, so that I don't have to hear all the other sounds around me.

Energy drinks dont ALL taste the same. some of them do yes but there are a lot of unique tasting energy drinks. I drank tons for 4 years now and i am fine. I started drinking energy drinks actually because i just got bored from regular drinks and energy drinks were unique and interesting taste and there were a lot of different ones also they have that really good fizziness level unlike coke and pepsi and stuff where if you drink too much of the fizz it burns your mouth. like energy drinks are lightly carbonated which makes them easier to drink

OK,

Here's what helps me, I wait until late at night most times, then first if I am modeling, I visit some favorite Modelers websites, and check out their Galleries and also watch any videos they have, for inspiration, Like Glen Southern, or one of the Kid Movie Modeler / Animators, then I grab my favorite Stress Ball, put it on the desk, grab my Zune, select my favorite upbeat playlist, that contains songs like the themes to: The Great American Hero, Karate Kid I & II, and Various Themes from Rocky Movies, A-Team, Macgyver, then Some stuff from Eminem Like One Shot, finally Hard Smash Mouth Tunes like Trapt, 3 Doors Down, others from the Time Life Collection of: "The Edge".

Make sure it is cold in here from Air Conditioner, Then open up DBPro / Visual Studio 2008 Depending on what I'm using DBPro or Dark GDK or DGDK.Net, and I also open Silo / or Frag3D / or 3DCoat depending on what stage of Modeling / animating or texturing I'm in, if I'm on levels it is: Cartography Shop or Another faborito level editor, and on my 4th monitor I will be playing a random tutorial video on either Point or Subdivision Modeling.

Also I have to have one of those old school Reveal Clicky Ergo Keyboards, The MOST important thing is, it HAS to have Loud Mechanical Switches, with a clear audible click response and noise, this helps me type 90+ Words a minute with 0 mistakes, if it isn't forget it, I'll waste most of my time, doublechecking code, backspacing, re-typing, and sometimes erasing and retyping what I just retyped again.

A Huge Glass of Pepsi With plenty of ICE is a must, also my Glasses Must Be Spotless, Knuckles cracked, eyedrops in, just for good measures, headache pills taken, and then to get rid of the stomach pain, so I can focus I take my Pain medicine.
Then in 10-15 Minutes I'm almost Ready.

Also I have one of those Chairs with the Anti-Sweat Seats, also the Net Style Back, with built in pad, to ease lower back pain, has to be tall enough that I can lean back and rest my head if necessary, also I have it high enough that my feet are off the ground, and a briefcase foot rest under the L Shaped Desk.

The MOST Important of All, if I'm modeling is my 19" P-Active LCD Pen Tablet Monitor, freshly cleaned, ready to go, lowered into the correct angle, so my arm / elbow can rest on the arm of my chair, the Monitor is on the Keyboard Tray Pulled Out, and the Ergo Old Clicky Keyboard is on top of the desk in front of the 2nd LCD Monitor, still reachable at an angle when I am focusing strictly on Coding, I can rotate my chair to point at that monitor and my chair fits under that part of the desk, so I can hammer down coding..

Oh yea, on my 3rd monitor I have to have A Browser window open for research / double checking that I have the latest updates for my Modeling / 3D Painting or Coding Application I am using, and Plugins etc.. also, the Room Must Be Completely Dark, Cool.

The 47" Philips TV is Playing either Biker build off / or American Chopper Senior vs. Junior, but volume level is low enough that I can hear it if I want, but also that I can ignore it also..

Finally I put the Ear buds from the zune in, start the playlist, crank it to 20 - Old version of the zune before they lowered the volume levels..

Put my camoflauge No Mark glove w/ the finger tips removed on the index finger, and the thumb, so I can grip the pen, but still click the buttons, yet it slides just right on the screen leaving no smudges, Take a huge drink of Pepsi, Put some dip in my lip, skoal pouches mint flavored, so I don't have to worry about it traveling around my mouth while I'm concentrating on drawing and stuff, put the empty gatorade bottle on the desk, lid off, and then begin!

This is the formula has helped me crank out some masterpieces, both codewise and graphic wise.. If I need Straight lines in my 3d Texture painting, I switch to Blacksmith3D Suite or I will use the option to edit projection w/ external 2d editor in 3D Coat, and use Paint.Net then resave, and finish the sculpting, bump mapping, displacement / normal maps in 3DCoat, re-save / export to *.obj files, bring the model into either Frag3D or Character Shop, to Rig and Animate the model if Latter just rig and re-save it, as the animations are mo-cap'd and read to go.. Finally depending on what I'm using for the engine, I use either Frag3D or Ultimate Unwrap3D to do the format Conversions to a format like DirectX or DBO as necessary..

If I'm coding in DBPro, I have to have the IDE setup as Black Background, with easy on the eyes bright colors but not too bright as to cause a headache, and have the General Help file open also on another monitor, and in the web browser monitor I have the Codebase open, and also TGC's Forums, any / all examples I can find for inspiration, sometimes a book / manual God Forbid.. ehehe on the desk as well, with certain places thumb tabbed, w/ printed text on them for easily finding what I need..

Ummm Also, there is the issue that In Every place in this room, I have to have access to a computer, from the couch an HP Laptop w/ 18.6" Widescreen, hooked to the Philips 47" TV via the HDMI Cable, with the desktop extended to it sometimes, or my other tablet Acer C300 Travelmate w/ Windows XP Tablet Edition by the Bed, along with books / manuals, and that is what I have to do, in case inspiration strikes at a wierd moment..

K, sorry for rambling on, but I read alot of other users comments and alot of them were similar to the things that I do, I guess you have to be kind of a wierdo Freak ehehe to be a Coder / 3D or 2D Artist or Game Maker that is..

I hope this helps or gives someone on here, ideas on how to best prepare mentally and physically for that next masterpiece, btw: Being disabled, sometimes the Pain Medicine helps, but sometimes it causes me to ramble like this, so for anyone that I offended by such a long post, I'm sorry..

Hehehe, Thank you! It is a really good setup, I like it, because your not always having to switch windows, or look for something, once you get started, all these kinds of things, will definitely slow if not stop production while coding, all together. So if you have all the apps, research and otherwise open and ready, on a separate screen, your way more productive!
