With Starcraft || being a monopoly, there aren't really any other RTS's I've seen except maybe like Stronghold that are coming out. Command and conquer and Age of Empires are dead.

I hope the genre isn't dead. It's some of the best gaming out there, IMO, even though I don't play games that often anymore. But I really got into "Rome: Total War" a few years ago...that game is awesome.

Yeah, but all the new games don't have that old feel to them, like you could just keep playing skirmish and online games for hours

Yep, that's the problem

It is the same thing with TBS apart from civ. I think the whole Strategy genre is dying.

I think it's because all those little boys now a days only look at graphics and are so brainwashed by all their friends that COD etc. is pure awesomeness that they can't appreciate the low poly art and the awesome shaders RTS's can give. I mean look at SC2, I like the graphics way more that COD6 or all those other shooters

Shogun 2 Total war is coming out and RUSE has just come out in the past months. There is also Anno and the Settlers series that seem to be updated with new releases every year.

Just bought halo wars yesterday, just becasue it finally dipped in price. Bought C&c red alert 3 before that, Kanes wrath before that, Supreme commander theres loads of them, Oh and im actually on Battleforge which is a full game for free supported by microtransactions which ive never used and still had no problems playing.

So the genre better not be dying, cause id hate to see it in full bloom, i wouldnt have enough money to buy them all D;

Dawn of War: Dark Crusade still gets a fair bit of attention on my PC...

It's so easy to just pick up and play. Also I normally play a little AoE 2 I've still got on my PC, or even Civilisations: Revolution, although that's such a terrible game - it's incredibly addictive...

Not dead, just not so much fuzz about the genre at the time except for SC2

I think the RTS genre is bored. There's as many RTS games out there as any other genre, games most people never hear about - especially the budget PC market, it's full of RTS games. I think the issue is that fans have waited on SC2 for so long, and CnC has not really evolved very much since Generals. It's just a little stale, the whole genre needs shaken up.

you know what they need to do to make it more like reality? they should have units need constant resources like soldiers need to eat and sleep right? why don't they have a feature where they need resources like food, water, sleep, etc. with those into the gameplay that can make the gameplay more interesting. people aren't immortal you know? i dunno just my idea.

Absolutely agree with Van B, someone needs to take the genre and evolve it to the next level, take RUSE I’m quite enjoying that at the moment, although the concept hasn’t been taken far enough. It would have been nice to be able to zoom all the way down to a Tank or infantry man and actually take control of that unit. i.e. Drive the tank or be the infantry-man 1st Person. The detail in the game is good enough to handle this as you can get in fairly close to the units anyway.

Upon taking control of the unit the game mechanics could suitably adjust to an action game with the results being fed back into the strategy layer once you zoomed back out. You could then really play from the General through to the foot soldier.

Ehh The new RTS's seem to be bad, so I just stick with Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 and occasionally Command and Conquer Tiberium Wars.

I love RTS.

Been playing CIVILIZATION 4 a ton lately.
Just 6 other civs left to conquer, 8 are down.

The 2,000,000th TGC post was made in MY ww2 weapons thread!

(I should now be a TGC legend, right?)

dead?! DEAD?! have you not tried Ruse?!
Ruse is one of the best out there IMHO, very VERY strategic and tactical game, and you really gotta put your mind to it.

World in conflict is STILL a great game imo, same with C&C3: tiberium wars

dunno about C&C4 =P

and as for games coming out this / next year, i dont know but iam pretty sure SC2 is only a great thing: with competition comes great things, as the companies gotta push themselfs more, and therefore they might pump out something great!
without competition, well... then we wouldnt have any great games really^^

Battlezone had that. Never understood why there wasn't more games like Battlezone, the second was great for multiplayer.

not a big fan of RTS never really got into them (i am generally bad at strategy games) but i love low poly graphics. it dosent look too realistic but you can tell what everything is or what it represents, its fast with the hardware you can even put some shaders on low poly stuff to make it look better. And you can get just as immersed in a low poly game as crysis i was completley absorbed by jedi knits dark forces 2, the level design in that game was one of the best i have ever seen and the charecters were pretty much made out of cubes and triangular prisms.

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them

Worldwide war is about as 'total' as it gets.

I was more pointing towards the gaming style..

Rome, medieval, shogun..
seeing a pattern? I didnt think Empire fit to well, but it worked alright.

for WW2 I personally think games like Hearts of iron (right?) and Victoria fits.

If you want good RTS games, I would suggest Company of Heroes if you like action with lots of explosions and stuff, or RUSE if you prefer *real* strategy. They are definitely the best strategy games I've played and it's now difficult for me to go back to Age of Empires of Command & Conquer as I don't see what's so strategic about them any more.

I played Empire Total War (which is also a good strategy game) but RUSE has a few rarely seen features which make the game extremely challenging against good players. For example, all units are visible on the map and you know their type (infantry, armour, airplanes) but you can't know exactly what they are before they are at range. The good thing is that you can trick your opponent by switching your radio frequencies (so what he thinks to be a tank assault is actually an infantry raid against his AT guns), or by sending dummy units on the battlefield. Also, you can hide your troops in cities or forest for ambushing the enemy, which makes recon absolutely vital.
Unfortunately, the AI is completely stupid and rigid (it's very easy to see it switching from one state to another)... Let's hope it gets fixed in a patch... :/
