I love the idea of MMO games, but I have been disappointed in my experience of them on almost all occasions. Not because of the games themselves but the people who play them.

I'm not sure what it's like on PC or X-Box but any game I've played online on the PS3 has been ruined by people who seem hell-bent on annoying others and have no intention of actually playing the game and having fun. I don't understand this behaviour, why did these people buy the game?

I have played FIFA 10 a lot, way too much, and 99% of the people I play online have no interest in playing football, they use glitches in the game to win and select the best team in the game so they can kick it past my players and sprint through and score. Do these people ENJOY playing like that?

I bought Red Dead Revolver two days ago and again I'm frustrated by other players in the online game. The idea of the free roam online game is that you are placed in the game world and there are a number of things you can do to gain experience points, which unlocks better weapons. Killing civilians earns a measly 1xp, lawmen gain 5xp and other players 10xp. A far greater reward is to be had from taking out gang hideouts, which earns upwards of 500xp. You can even join forces with other players to create a posse and share the spoils. But people spend all their time just shooting each other and if they have mics they verbally abuse each other while they do it.

This gets boring really fast and there's no winning with these people, if I holster my gun and try to be friendly they shoot me, if I see them aiming at me and I'm quick enough to shoot them they see it as some sort of vendetta to follow me around until they get me back.

There have been a couple of times when it was fun, when we had two big posses battling each other but it seems a bit pointless when there's nothing to fight for. The idea of riding in a posse sounded really cool to me but I'm yet to find people who are interested in actually playing the game.

They are called griefers and they love to annoy other people. To them, annoying people is part of the game.

Have you never played online games on the PC?

The only way to enjoy online games properly, is to play with friends, or people who are into actually playing the game - when you find someone who plays properly, add them as a friend.

It's exactly the same with GTA:IV - I like the idea of playing multiplayer without killing, in the free-roam mode. But that turns into a spawn-killing-rape-fest immedietly. I bought GTA for the PC so I could play with PC gamers, who I thought might be more into the stunt driving, cop killing tomfoolery that I like. When I do find a game with friendly fire off - all people do is complain. The way I see it, if you want to shoot people, go play deathmatch, go play COD, and leave me and my motocross bike stunts alone!

Its what keeps making me stop playing WoW.
I used to go to Guild Wars instead because it wasnt full of mindless idiots... But since Guild Wars 2 has advertised so much since last year, the sane community of Guild Wars 1 is almost disappeared.
Its like a dying race.

Really its kids, because what they do is show off their scores to their mates on how good they are. Not because they like the game. Eg a new game comes out and they jump on the bandwagon and try and be the best player in their class i guess... (i dont really know), but the amount of children playing on-line games is just getting out of hand.

I feel the same way about MMOs. I just don't like them anymore because of the griefers. Back when they first started and I played Ultima Online we just called them PKs (Player Killers). When I first heard somebody use PK I already knew it was something bad because I grew up in church and learned how bad PKs (Preachers Kids) are long before the internet existed. I can't help but think both PKs have the same attitude... if they think they can get away with it they'll do it.

Surely thats a bit of a ridiculous comment, the majority of games are aimed at kids. And I as a kid know of no-one who will not enjoy themselves just for prestige...

You even just contradicted yourself there, you say that it really is the kids that are the problem and then later say that you "dont really know".

I don't mean to be harsh, but I think its far too easy to blame everything on kids... surely if people can kill you and want to they will and why isn't that fair? If you don't want to be killed blame the game designers for not making a friendly fire or team mode...

When I play online, I play mostly L4D2 and TF2. In TF2, you can't really only play with your friends, there will always be some random, if you play like I do, and I have no problem with people that play TF2, all seem to be nice people there... mostly. I can say I have never ran into an annoying person there.

But Left 4 Dead 2 is another story... COMPLETELY another story. Just press Quick Game on any of the game modes, and you'll propably run into some of these:

People who take it too seriously. I have no problem with wanting to win, but when people start swearing on the chat becouse someone failed; is just stupid. And if you faile twice or more, then you're sure to get kicked.

12-year-olds playing it... nothing really against them, unless they talk on the microphone with their helium voice all the time... and leave the mic on even thou they are not talking, that's just annoying. To just hear the buzzing the whole time you are playing...

Foreign, who just can't talk engilsh with the team. ONe itme this russian guy just talked russian all the time, trying to give instructions to the rest of the team, but I was there trying to tell him to please talk english so that I understand too. Did he? No. He kept the language russian. Then when I die, he talked his first sentence in english, telling me, that why I didn't do how he told me to do, just assuming I understood russian, even thou I told many times, that I don't and would we please talk in english, becouse we all peopably understood it.

Ragers... no need to introduce them. Oh and rushers too.

So yeah. That's why I always try to find as many friends as I can, to get playing with me. But you can't always have it that way can you?

But yeah, every game has some of those idiots who dont enjoy playing and make the game miserable for everyone else... I guess its just the nature of humans...

Cheers,

Sigh, tell me about it. I've seen so many Mario Kart Wii players using a certain bike/character combination (bowser bike - known as the flame runner in America, and Funky Kong) and doing whatever glitches they can to win. I don't really understand it, I guess they are just playing for their ego rather than for fun. And don't get me started on the cheaters with unlimited powers...

Haha i had a guy actually translating the hosts' so called orders on battleforge in a 12 player rts game. It was hailirous since he was aweful but the literal translations done by the guy was great. He was saying stuff like;

go location, procreate (spawn) burnt wing (flame wing or something) But he kept rattling on and on, till some guy told him to go - yourself with - - and he took it as a compilment. ;D

I personally save up Livin' in the Sunlight, Lovin' in the Moonlight for when 8 year olds come online...

A, they're pretty short sighted, and it's all One on One me, come on, one on one! I'll quickscope, noscope you!

For lulz, I accepted a challenge, and quickscoped him with my noobtube 'til he left,

B, Their voices. Nuff said, I think the XBL mic increases the pitch on playback,

C, I dunno if this is connected, but 90% of them are Americans, and they all tell me how in real life they'd take the Barrett 50Cal their dad has in Afghanistan when he brings it back and noscope me with it...

So many errors and he tells me to stop calling him a liar in a voice only bats can hear...

I even came across some...African American gangster gentlemen, on Halo 3? Kept getting called cracker for half an hour, got annoyed, then they called me racist for telling them to shut up..?

But none of the games they actually play are aimed at them. Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Counter-Strike: Source, Halo etc..

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

I mainly play PC games and I never play multiplayer over the internet, I much prefer to play over a LAN, I've helped organise a few small LAN parties with friends and people I know. We had a lot of fun with these, with a lot of banter, but none of the hastle you've described.

On the other hand, you can't play games like WOW or LOTRO over a LAN, which is the main reason I don't play games like those, plus of course, I refuse to pay for a game twice (1st time to own the disk & install the game, 2nd time just to play the game I've already payed for to install).

I game therefore I am.

Luckily for me, I found out that I only really get annoyed with people when seeing them in person. Over the interwebs I don't care

Something to look forward too.

...and yes, people sux on online games. That's why I prefer RP realms as they tend to have users who play for the lore and acting out their character's and stories, to you know, have fun!

I think my perfect online game would be something that has a deep lore and well established world, with a gameplay mixture of Dark Cloud and Harvest Moon. Ah, and unique graphics...screw next gen, I want original fun.

I never realised how much I hate the sound of children's voices! Worse if they broadcast their crappy dance music through their mics! I had some guy on FIFA trying to show off his rap skills

But really the whole "being a jerk" isn't exclusive to kids, I'd say age makes no difference, I've seen everything from 12-35 year olds be jerks, and that's just guessing from their voices. They are mind numbingly immature though so they might as well all be 3 year-olds. These are the kind of people that if you tried to play Monopoly with them they'd shove a hotel up their nose, throw the rest of them at you and chew on the money.

I wish there was some way we could split all the jerks, pks, griefers, etc (I didn't know there were so many names for these people!) from the role-players and give them separate worlds. Then the doofuses can go around blowing each other up while the rest of us get on with having fun. You could just make a separate lobby called "Legendary Super High Ranked Players of Greatness Survival Zone" and all the noobs would flock to it.

What I don't understand about Read Dead Revolver, is that if you want to just shoot other people there are games you can enter to do that, and you'll get loads more points for doing it than killing people in free roam mode.

I had another game tonight, I joined this guy's posse and we went to take out a gang hideout. I was ahead of him shooting people and he stabs me because I was in his way! and then he threw a stick of dynamite right in front of us and blew both of us up Later he stole my horse and when I was killing loads of bandits he shot me and kicked me from the posse. So I carried on by myself because no one wants to play as a team it's really hard to do those missions by yourself but what else can I do when no one will play nice lol

It's not games have such problems, all the "social" interaction sites seem to suffer a similar fate.
