Ok, perhaps a little over-dramatic - but my new PC build made a small cracking noise and is now quite lifeless.
It sounded like a capacitor going, although there was no burnt electrics smell or smoke to suggest this.
Turns out on assembling it the 4-pin ATX power connector from the 20+4 connector got yanked off just before powering it up. It went into the BIOS fine, but after a minute of Windows installation the pop occurred and it shut straight down.
Now I\'ve taken the motherboard out and there doesn\'t appear to be any visible damage to it which is a relief. I\'ve got the PSU out too and plan on shorting a couple of pins to turn it on and check the voltages.
I\'m hoping it\'s the PSU because I\'m really not looking forward to buying another motherboard. Hopefully it\'s something like the fuse has blown.
Although it\'s a fairly decent 500W PSU (Raidmax), I\'m guessing the Windows installation required more power than it could cope with due to the lack of 4-pin connector. This seems strange as I don\'t see how the few components on there could be drawing 500W.
Bottom line, can anyone suggest the extent to the damage it may have caused? I don\'t see how lack of power would destroy a motherboard.
