Ok, perhaps a little over-dramatic - but my new PC build made a small cracking noise and is now quite lifeless.

It sounded like a capacitor going, although there was no burnt electrics smell or smoke to suggest this.

Turns out on assembling it the 4-pin ATX power connector from the 20+4 connector got yanked off just before powering it up. It went into the BIOS fine, but after a minute of Windows installation the pop occurred and it shut straight down.

Now I\'ve taken the motherboard out and there doesn\'t appear to be any visible damage to it which is a relief. I\'ve got the PSU out too and plan on shorting a couple of pins to turn it on and check the voltages.

I\'m hoping it\'s the PSU because I\'m really not looking forward to buying another motherboard. Hopefully it\'s something like the fuse has blown.

Although it\'s a fairly decent 500W PSU (Raidmax), I\'m guessing the Windows installation required more power than it could cope with due to the lack of 4-pin connector. This seems strange as I don\'t see how the few components on there could be drawing 500W.

Bottom line, can anyone suggest the extent to the damage it may have caused? I don\'t see how lack of power would destroy a motherboard.

No, it will not power up. There was no smoke or bad smells fortunately.

It was a brand new PSU so I doubt it. Still, better the PSU than the mobo.

Brand new? New things either fail within the first week, or after the expected life...

Make sure your computer isn't drawing too much current/doesn't require more power than the PSU can handle (if the problem was the PSU)

Otherwise I have no idea what else could have gone wrong...

How about a lil info? What MB, power supply and processor you got?

[edit] I can't see it burning up the PSU, but it can fry a circuit on the MB from not plugging in the 4 pin connector if you have a Pentium 4 and some others. The 4 pin plug is to provide 2 extra channels of 12v power to keep it all from draining on the 1 pin in the large connector. Without these extra paths it could overload that 1 circuit on the MB.

They speak for themselves really.

Cons: Died after only 4 months. OK, that's not a big deal, it's only a PSU. Well, it also fried my motherboard. Now we've delved into "big deal" territory! I wasn't going to let the bad PSU cause me to think less of the case it came with. After all, the Smilodon is worth what I paid for alone. So I essentially got this PSU free. But now I found that it's also available for purchase by itself. Who thought that was a good idea?!

Other Thoughts: Newegg handled things very well. If there's any lesson to be extracted from this, it's that Newegg takes care of their customers. If you want to find out for yourself just how well they take care of you when things go wrong, then buy this PSU. It will more than likely stop working, and you'll find out for yourself how good Newegg's customer service is. If, however, you just want one that works, then buy something else"

Just before I hit the 1 week mark with this product...I was playing Call of Duty 4 when a big spark flew out the back and toasted only itself. Thankfully, it toasted itself and not the whole system. One spark and it was done. I had another power supply, so I threw it in there and I'm good to go. Don't buy this....please spend your money on something of a little higher quality, unless you are running a small system.[/quote]

Nwegg has even pulled its stock because of the deaths.

Bah that is brilliant, exactly the same combo here: Smilodon case + PSU. Shame there weren't any negative reviews when I bought the combo.

The really annoying thing? I'm in the UK and got a friend in the US to ship it from Newegg - which means no refund for me
