I upgraded the other day to Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat, version 10.10. It's amazing. Once again the Ubuntu team has taken a few more steps forward in awesomeness. The themes have improved, they released their own home-brew font and it is incredible, the Software Center has become very useful and user-friendly. The terminal can now be completely forgotten if you so desire.

Has anyone else tried it out yet?

Not yet. I haven't been able to due to time constraints, and the fact that I'm preoccupied with programming with DBPro at the moment. If I go to another OS right now I'll get distracted and won't finish my project.

I love the look and sound of it, though. I was a fan of 9.10 and 10.04, so I'm sure I'll love 10.10 just as much and more. Ubuntu rocks, plain and simple.

I hope to at least download the ISO and burn it to a CD/DVD soon so that I can at least be able to install it when I finally have the time.

I've installed 10.10 and it's ok so far. It's not a huge leap in innovation, but that's to be expected since the big changes will come when Canonical (hopefully) adopts Gnome Desktop 3 after it's released next April.

Gaming support is improving all the time. Install Wine from the Software Center; it's a Windows emulator which allows you to install and run Windows programs in Linux. The only thing you need to bear in mind is that, currently, DirectX support is very limited, so you can only really play OpenGL games at the moment.

As far as installation goes, it's very simple. You can either boot from the CD (you can order one or download an iso image) and install it as you main OS, or you can pop in the cd when Windows is running, and install it alongside Windows to give you a dual-boot PC.

Yes, you can, you can install it alongside your existing OS to give you a dual boot PC where you choose which OS to load at the boot-up screen.

need a new partition on my drive, don't have space for partition on drive (phooey)
I'll probably buy a cheap low capacity drive

PS. I advise everybody who's ever been fed up with their operating system to try out Ubuntu, Its pretty simple to.

My version of linux doesn't have a "create startup disk" option, can I do this from the terminal? I want to boot from USB.

TBH I'm no good when it comes to using the terminal, my main reason for liking Ubuntu is, it cuts out the need to use it.

Which Linux distro. do you use?

Are there any support sites for your distro? Maybe you can get help with your question there?

Sorry I can't be of more help :S

Ive installed ubuntu 10.10 recenty, i got the same problem that ive had since version 6. The graphics driver and Network card drivers never work. Though interestingly they never do with windows as well. Its easy to fix on ubuntu as it finds and installed them for me. Windows on the other hand gives you all the work to, so i think ubuntu is easier to install then windows!

I haven't noticed that much change(there is still some though), im a fan of the new software center though.

Plus to everyone thinking of trying linux, checkout Wubi, its a way to install ubuntu with no possibility of harm to your computer.

I love Ubuntu!
I've had a bit of a palava with my PC lately. I reformatted my harddrive a while ago only to find my XP disc was only for upgrading from win98 - which I had long since lost the disc to - so a friend gave me this weird version of ubuntu called Puredyne to use; It has lots of graphics and audio programs on it. At first I was really put off by it and found it hard to use, this distro had a few problems as well like I had to go searching for the program associated with opening files into a window because it didn't know what to do when I clicked on a file! I think that problem was from within Firefox not the actual OS but still it was annoying. Another thing is theres no driver for my optical drive and I had a hell of a time working out how to mount USB drives.
Anyway, once I got to grips with it I found I preferred it to windows.
BUT... Dark Basic only works in windows! I borrowed my dads copy of XP and installed it but then my PC only booted into XP and windows was completely unaware of linux...

or any of my files from linux. I was pretty sure I hadn't formatted the partition that linux was installed on, oh yeah since using linux I'd forgotten how awful the windows os installer is! It wouldn't give me any info on the partitions, each one said <unrecognised format> or something so I basically had to guess which one was my linux os but I remembered leaving a small partition free for another os so I picked that one. Windows then installs a bit... then asks me questions, then installs a bit more... then asks more questions... it takes so long to install and even longer because I kept coming back and finding it has been waiting for me.
So anyway my linux OS had apparently disappeared according to windows but I knew that wasn't the case, luckily I had the new Ubuntu 10.10 on a USB stick so I installed it - it has a much friendlier installer - and what do you know ubuntu allows me to choose which of the three OS's to boot at startup.
I think learning linux is actually easier than USING windows.

I think linux is great but i never really used it or know how to use it (only used ubuntu 9 for a short period of time for the sake of experiment) just because i know windows so well its easier for me to use it and dark basic and games are for windows. altho i do appreciate linux for its modifiability and expendability. But recentley i was introduced to something cooler and i made it my goal to leard PC BSD. its a unix based OS completley modifiable and unlike seperate linux software is usually not compatable with other distros. (like a program for ubunty might not be compatible with debian or something) the good thing about BSD is its compatible with 90% of all the unix based software. as soon as i reorgonise my room and find a place to set up my computers (i perfer to put them on top of desks, that way theyll get less dusty as most dust accumilates on the floor and my vaccum cooling system will suck in all the dust) right nnow i have a lack of desk space but as soon as i set up the right furniture i will have the whole side of my room filled with computers (gonna mod up the cases a little blinking buttons, leds lcd panels etc it will look like a super computer system from an 80s scifi move or like a room of a computer hacker from some movie or something lol) i was also thinking of trying to make a clustering project running one os across several computers using each one as a cpu core or something. I am sure BSD is just right for the job. Also unix/linux specialists are in demand of the IT business these days and most peo[ple whio specialize in linux are specialised in one or 2 distros. anyway people told me that if i learn BSD it will make me a specialist in every linux distro. yeah i got carried away with this post lol

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them
