If anybody has some experience, or a good idea of the result;

For and AMD processor, should I go for the top of the range 4-core, or the basic 6-core?

i have the top of the line 3.4ghz 4 core AMD and i am very happy with it. I am not sure if there are benefits to a 6 core but i dont think software these days can really take advantage of the 6 core. Also i didnt have the money for a 6 core back then but i always think ahead. thats why i got a motherboard that supports 6 core
also apperently with good cooling this processor (the 3.4ghz quadcore) can stabely overclock to 4GHZ+ without even heating up

same here Pagan, although i havent particularly needed to overclock it, as 3.4 ghz is fast enough for me.

It runs great and does everything i need it to do.

My only problem is my graphics card. It sucks. HD4650.

the 4xxx series got outdated lickity split.

But my processor keeps a nice low usage profile for the most part.

Until software starts using 6 cores, it's almost pointless. Go for which ever has the higher clock speed.
