I coded in QBasic/QuickBasic for years as a youth. 9 years ago or so, after flirting with C++/DirectX and not enjoying it, I did a search for DirectX Basic and found a game made in Darkbasic that was a remake of the traffic jam logic puzzle game. It had won some contest I think. Looking at the source code, it felt like coming home again.

After looking at several websites (possibly TGC too) I joined Real Game Tools community and bought Darkbasic Pro from them in a CD case with spiral bound manual. I think I paid $100 for it. When it arrived, I found out that my old Win98 machine with onboard graphics was not going to cut it. So I bought a Dell with a 3D graphics card for $900 so I could use my nice new Darkbasic Pro CD.

Jeees I can't remember, been with DB for years (10+ id imagine), originally joined DB just after it was first commercially released, back in the days of its big full screen editor and small forum under the name of DarknessMaster ... since then ive been through the phases of RGT, LLRGT and now the current home, with the name of Mike or VapourMike ...

Ive done special deals with DB members and hosting and was part of the admin team of LLRGT, those where the days and wow how things have moved on since!

A long while ago somebody re-made Ultima 4 with DBC and released the source. It was called Ultima 4 - Virtue of Humility.

Basically I found TGC while looking for Ultima clones and old school tile RPGs.

I used to code in QuickBasic 4.5 with the Zephyr SVGA Lib. had lots of fun, was looking to get back into coding and nwas doing searches on google, found Blitz Basic, Dark Basic and others. I downloaded the demo version and in a few lines of code made a prototype of a Game CD for a project I was working on at the time (Space Empires V) (the demo was a spinning 3d CD showing the spiffy label on one side and the shiny CD on the other.) they didn't go with my CD Design but it was fun to make that quick demo. I figured if I could do that in 5 min of coding it had possibilities. Grabbed it for Christmas, and had lots of fun with it.

I do still miss the 'interpreted basic way of coding, but it's a small annoyance to have to compile and run. But I got used to that when I played around with the DJGPP Dev C++ and the Allegro lib. that was fun too, but the syntax drove me nuts.

Even today I have problems wrapping my head around using '0' (zero) as the first element in an array, and even when I make an array 2 units bigger to use 1-15 for example (DIM Array_xyz(17) )the program still seems to stuff things into slot '0' Grrrr.. even if I put checks in the code IF <1 then it = 1.. poof slot zero gets the data. But I digress, programmers are a different breed when it comes to counting. I count to 10 1..2..3...10 Programmers count 0,1,2,3..9. (in my time in school that would not have made the grade LOL)

Most of what I want to do is 2D, and that's not DBPro's strong point, I later got Play Basic, but at about the same time my free time evaporated and I haven't done much with it yet.

And that's my DBPro story and I'm sticking to it.

Cheers!

P.S. don't ask me for specific code samples of how my arrays went wrong I don't have any of the tests any more and do not have the courage to work with arrays any more, I'll stick to artwork.

A few years ago, I bought the 3D Game Maker, (Which I ended up giving to a nephew.) I think DB was the primary product at the time, but DBP was available, but as I recall, not at a price I was willing to pay. I forgot about it for a long time.

A couple months ago, I saw a review of FPSC on some tech blog and decided to try, then buy it. Then I started playing around with the free version of DBP and decided to buy DGS. I'm still just poking around with it, but it's been fun.

I knew about it since around 2005, but I was skeptical of the products. It wasn't until I finally downloaded the demo of FPS Creator, that I was amazed and signed up for the community. I come around off and on all the time.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

I had originally learned a language called Phrogram, was a great language, new too(came out in 2006.) Either way, it is still developing it's 3d features, so i got tired of not being able to easily make 3d games, so i looked into C++, too hard. So i think i looked up 3d game programming language on Google and the first website was TGC. I saw the code examples, and i fell in love. Since then for the past nine months (not long, i know) i did things in DBPro but after that i decided to move back to C++, and it's working out quite well. Program taught me object oriented programming, DBPro taught me game programming, so im learning to combine them in C++ now.

Now THAT got kinda off subject

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

The only programming I was taught was when I did a bit of QBASIC programming as part of my mechanical engineering degree and used it, plus the maths and physics I'd learned, to make a few simple games.

In 2001, purely by chance, I spotted a boxed version of DBC in a shop and bought it, thinking it might be fun. I first browsed the website the same year but didn't join until 2005 (can't remember why, I think I wanted to search for something in the code base) and didn't start posting until this time last year, when I got internet access at home.

I can't remember how long I spent struggling with the inbuilt editor but then discovered darkedit on the disk, which really made things easier.

Even though I've had DBC for almost ten years now, I've produced almost nothing of note but I love messing about with it.

It's been too long to remember the details, but it has been 9-10 years, so that's to be expected. I do recall first joining the RGT forums for a year or so before coming here.

Man..... has it REALLY been that long? Can I please go outside now? I miss the sky.

As some others have mentioned, I used QuickBASIC 4.5 and use to visit a QBASIC website regularly. One of the projects I was working on I needed help with, so I did a search and stumbled across TGC. I don't remember what year it was though. I kept thinking it was before the Y2K stuff but I'm not sure. However, I wasn't able to afford DarkBASIC until recently. In some ways, I'm glad I waited.

Oh...and one of the things I needed help with that project was sound and I ended up finding BWSB sound engine for QuickBASIC that was very impressive for its time.

It must have been a good 9 or so years ago. A friend lent me a copy of the cover disc of PC Gamer, lo and behold it had a big magic game making program on it. Installed. Greeted with a daunting black screen (I was only 9 at the time). Stumped. >>MAKE GAME. Nothing. Hmm

Picked it up a year later and found the demos, modified some of them to see what happened and went from there really. Good times xD
