Well gents, ladies, for those of you that remember me from the good-ol'times when this forum was still powered by candles and the souls and dreams of people that wanted to emulate sand-physics for their uberawesome 1080p MMORPGRTSFPS with PVP ARG elements to be hosted on a Commodore/386 in the basement: it's been a while since I last showed myself here! There's a good reason for that: I've been busy! For those that don't know me: mosey along now, nothing to see here (except an awesome game trailer).

Busy with making games, obviously - I started a little game studio in the Netherlands called Vlambeer (www.vlambeer.com) with another guy and we're about to release our second title, Super Crate Box (www.supercratebox.com) after tomorrow!

I once promised myself to never write one of those 'goodbye' topics but sadly, I'm only going to get busier so I'll do it anyway: I wanted to give my time with TGC a proper farewell and thank The Game Creators for being a constructive, friendly and active community with its sometimes frustrating but always awesome tools.

But anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know I'm still alive (for whoever cares) and for whoever indeed DOES care: we can keep in touch through Twitter (@tha_rami or @Vlambeer) or *gulp* Facebook (Rami Ismail or Vlambeer).

For those and everyone else that likes retro and/or highscores and/or frantic gameplay and/or chiptunes: enjoy a crazy Super Crate Box trailer, and check the release on October 22nd!

Awww, not another great user that leaves the forum Well, I wish you all the best with your game studio, and I will be sure to check out that trailer! (Can't right now, I'm at work, and it doesn't allow streaming videos)

Cheers

Thanks!

Just checked out your trailer, and it was really awesome! I love the old style of the game, the graphics, and the game-play looks great too I hope you will also consider making it multiplayer

You wouldn't believe it, but it's actually made in GML with the intention of porting it to C#/C++ - but we ran out of time for the IGF competition and thus submitted the GML version. Didn't turn out too shabby and the game is plain fun.

It releases tomorrow - we're quite excited .

For those interested, the game is now live at www.supercratebox.com.

I'll check back here if I complete something interesting again in the future, but until then, see you on the interwebs!

There was me missing you and you come back to tell us you're leaving. You're a bad sport my man. Grandma left me too, but kudos to you for actually saying goodbye.

Whiny kid aside. It's pretty awesome what you're doing and nice you've got a well rated indie game out there, so I hope for the best mate.

But you'll be back eventually, you'll miss this place. Everybody does when they 'leave for good'.

Haha, thanks. Just a quick heads up:

Super Crate Box was nominated in Bytejackers Free Indie of the Year award and in IndieDB's Top 100 Indies of the Year contest. We need your votes in both, so if you believe Super Crate Box is one of the better indie games last year, we would be much obliged if you could vote at www.bytejacker.com (poll on the right) and http://www.indiedb.com/games/super-crate-box.

Time's running out and every vote might help. I'd prefer it if you've actually played/enjoyed the game before you vote, though - I'd rather win a game contest than a popularity contest .

We know about Notch mentioning the game in his blog, by the way - that was really cool. It appears Team Meat are also avid fans of the game, and Jonathan Blow of Braid said he enjoys it as well. It's really amazing how much support the game is getting

Just a really, really quick addition - I know this is turning into something of a blog but still.

We won IGN's "Best Free-to-Play PC Game 2010" award!

It's really amazing what's happening around us now - we really hope that we'll end up in the top 10 of IndieDB's contest and in the Bytejacker poll. If you want to help out, voting links are above .

Just thought I'd let you know. I'm just really, really amazed and happy right now.

Thanks guys, we won the Bytejacker award. No such luck on the IndieDB awards, but instead we did get EDGE's Best Friday Game of 2010 award.

So, merry cratemas!

Thanks both of you

Hey, tha_rami. I played SCB and I love it! Very well done. My friend and I use Game Maker but our games look noob compared to yours. I doubt it, but if you ever want to work together or whatnot, let me know.

Congrats on the IGF nod! On a side note, I can't help but notice the similarity of your company name and Lee Bamber. Any connection?

Grandma's gone? Shame.
Well, see you around rami, I've been one of your twitter stalkers for a while now anyway so the my longing for you won't be as immense as it would otherwise.
One can take that as one wishes.
EDIT: Well... I'm a few months late. But hey! I'm me so that's good enough of a reason to let it slide okay? Sweet.

Yeah, so. Why not keep this up to date?

So, first things first: we didn't win the IGF award for 'Excellence in Design'. Desktop Dungeons did, and I must add, completely expected. They didn't seem to expect it themselves, though.

In any case, that doesn't mean nothing is going on! We are working on an official Serious Sam game called Serious Sam: The Random Encounter.. It's really cool that the news got here before I did, so thanks, charger bandit, I'm honored.

Seperately, we have two other projects running - an iPad game and a Flash game. Basically, we're really busy but we wouldn't have it any other way .

Sorry for the bump, but just a random question:

Since Super Crate Box is made in GameMaker I was wondering what your thoughts are regarding GM? Specifically, would you recommend it as a prototyping tool?

I've been contemplating buying it (there is no demo for OS X) just to prototype ideas in before committing to them fully. Would GM fit the bill do you reckon?

Super Crate Box was originally to be prototyped in Game Maker, then ported to another engine for compatibility and performance. Since we ran out of time prior to the IGF deadline, we instead opted to release the prototype and polished it to shine.

At Vlambeer, we use a lot of rapid prototyping - we probably work on a tenth of the ideas and prototypes we create - every single one we make in Game Maker. The Object Oriented approach is great for being able to quickly and rapidly add upon things and the visual editor allows for rapid generation of play scenarios. I would definitely recommend it for prototyping 2d gameplay.

A quick note on the Mac version: there are some serious issues with that, ranging from builds not working on the high end models to glitches. For simple prototyping, it should be good to go, for anything serious, you might want to consider those things. Althoug the investment, of course, is minimal, so it won't hurt, I suppose.

Cool, I'll certainly try it for prototyping then.

Thanks for the tip regarding OS X too
