Just a little help here folks, i need to cover something worthwhile since the main topic choice was facebook. Now as good as facebook is to try and examine, lol, kay, wuu2, nothing or stories of how you got drunk, are not what makes a good formal document.

In all seriousness i was going to examine 4chan, as it is a literal bomb shell for both social and ethical issues. But being able to pull it off will take alot of effort since its a risky area to cover. Cyber bullying, along with the whole lundary list of raids and general cess-pit anno behaviour.

Torrenting would be another but again im not sure of the issues to cover.

I know there are other uni students here so im thinking you might have came across these kind of assignments already. If you have what did you cover? Im not asking for you guys to hold my hand, just the general layout of what you would break it down into.

Ive got 2k of words to work with, so i can get a decent amount of information in there. while still keeping it within reason.

So any help out there?

You gotta get your hands dirty if you want to write something interesting.

Facebook is dull, really - it's your friends that make it interesting, but even then it's still pretty damn dull. I would cover YouTube instead, because there is so much on there that is interesting, stuff you've never seen before, or want to see again, or thought you'd never see. Theres a TV program in the UK called Rude Tube, and it's basically about the best and worst of YouTube, yesterday they even had the epic misshannahminx, and a guy doing a double flip on a wheelchair. But anyway, it's a very entertaining program, because it's all stuff that I just wouldn't go looking for.
So I would definitely choose YouTube over any other 'social' site, I find it's more honest, because it's difficult to lie or exagerate on video - and the fakeness of some people on Facebook just puts me off, I wouldn't speak to these people in real life, so why would I speak to them online.

Anyway, I say choose your own personal favorite, what service do you use the most, what service are you biggest on (i.e. friend lists). Always try and put in something extra - practically every student will be pawing over Facebook writing their reports about how great it is, don't follow the same tedious path as them. I would cover the different levels of user, from the casual browser, to the guys who get in trouble at work because of it, then go onto looking at the celebrities that often emerge from these sites, bands that get recognition, good causes. Then look at any negative aspects (bullying etc) and conclude it with some 'interesting' facts about the service (number of users in first year compared with now for instance, how much is it worth, who owns it now).

Im pretty sure im allowed to post up my work for crit, wheather i get though lol but help would be nice, even if its just bashing it to pieces.

So far i have churned together this;
The World From Behind A Mask

Oscar Wilde said best, "Give a man a mask and he'll tell you the truth"

With the exponential growth of technology and means of communication, it is not surprising there are those who would take advantage of such a resource that is the internet, nevertheless abuse it. As more and more people gain access to the World Wide Web, we see new and interesting trends within our social interactions of which, some are not for the best. With an unending tidal rise in abuse or ‘flame rates’ more and more community forum sites are switching to terms and conditions of use, where violating these rules can lead to a revoke of site access. This maintains order and stabilises a hierarchy giving users direction. Though, in the last self proclaimed ‘free’ bastions of the internet it’s quite the opposite. These sites are a chaos mass of actions and reactions normally with no discernable order social order. This has lead to the impersonal and distanced use of the internet and to the creation of ‘annon’ the slang abbreviation anonymous, where users are now masked en-masse and their actions unchecked. This in itself is the source of most social problems we now face in modern world.

For this assignment, I have chosen to exam a single particular site that has become renowned for its reputation. It has changed our language use, fought for freedom of speech, flooded the video giant YouTube with explicit content as a show of force against filtering music, and hacked into government websites who harassed users under the cover of copyright infringement. For most, these could be seen as admirable goals but for the laundry list of reasons there is only one ideal that could be applicable, ‘i did it for teh lolz’ and the urban dictionary provides the most widely used definition;
"I did it for the lulz" (IDIFTL) is a catchphrase which serves as an explanation for any trolling you do or any internet drama you cause. -By EDiot-Urban Dictionary-Dec 26, 2006-(Source 1). Though it must be said, this phrase is so widely used that its meaning is interpreted differently by each user but its basic use is clear, ‘Because we could’.

The site at forefront of these unconceivable actions is one called 4chan, with approximately 650,000,000 posts per month, according to an online forum statistical tracker. (See source 2) This sprawling mass of users has lead to it being held in high regards by the very worst and best of people. Why would I choose such an area to cover? It’s easy; sites such as these are a driving force to change our society and perceived right and wrong. People openly speak their mind on any topic without fear of persecution, though significant traits are exacerbated, people can see ideals, however dirty and unfounded being formed by a conglomerate mass of users.

Conclusion.

Right it seems preachy, but thats because ive sugar coated it as much as i could. We all know what 4chan really is, an ill tear it down as soon as ive built it up enough to get a good intrest brewing. I still need to find a paper/journal and a book that i can use in this, but im struggling to find one. Im off to harass the hell outa my tutors tommorow but for now im stuck in a rut and i cant get further. Its like its killing my soul right now. Ive set out todo headers and hoping 500 words a section but i just keeping going back to the stupid introduction and keep changing it. If anything seems amiss or even if you could point me in the right direction for a source it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks anyway
