Hi Guys/Gals,

Just need some advice on which Graphics card to get...my current one has given up the ghost (and it is a three year old ATi). The ones that I've been looking at at the moment are the following:

- GeForce 9500GT 1GB GDDR2 DVI PCI-Express
- GeForce GT 240 1GB GDDR3 VGA/DVI PCI-Express
- GeForce GT 430 1GB GDDR3 VGA/DVI PCI-Express

Which ones would be ideal for the TGC products - including FPSC x9/x10 and the Dark Game Studio suite.

Your advice would be most appreciated.

All of these aren't worth buying, buy something like Geforce GTS450 or Radeon 6850.

What? You're not made out of money?

They won't be beasts, but they're better than nothing. I'd check the performance charts for those cards, I don't know which one's better off hand. I know the 9500 series is pretty slow. Try getting a gtx/gts series card if that's in your budget. A gts 270 is very good. I'd spend about 150 or more for a really nice card. 100 at the very least. Anything less and while they'll work for what you want buy I might recommend saving up a little more.

Generally the more expensive the better

Thanks for the advice guys...

I have looked at the card...and the prices...hmmm...

One thing I have noticed is that most of the newer cards require a PCI-e 6-pin additional power supply...and guess what - my supply dun't support that - hence the reason for my list...

So - I'm looking at a new PSU, as well as a new card...I've looked at both the Radeon 6850 and the NVidea GTX4xx....nice cards but a bit pricey...

I have been told to go for a Radeon HD5750 - any good? Its priced reasonably at 90 sterling pounds, and has 1Gb DDR5 memory and is DX11 compliant...

BUT - the Nvidea cards have the PHysX module - so was wondering if this makes any difference at all? I knwo that TGC recommend Nvidea - but putting a Radeon in the machine - woudl that slow down anything???

Yeah but when buying 8800 series they must be with the new chip, the first editions were defective. Also a Radeon 4850/5870/4890 is cheap and powerful.

I'd suggest spending £10 more and getting a 5770, just not an XFX one as their build quality is known to be the worste

Even if your PSU does not have 6 pin power cable you get a 2x4pin molex to 6 pin converter so you can run your graphic card anyways.

Thats the problem - it has no molex connections - its only got 5 sata connections

Also - after looking over my tower case I have noticed that all these cards are two slots - and my chasis only allows a single slot PCI-e card - bummer...what it means that I may have to hack the chasis to make space for the extra slot...

This is not looking good...looks like I may have to settle for a single slot device....which one?

Well for single slot I would look after older GPUs. For example a Radeon 4770 would be nice,I have one and it can handle pretty much everything.

If you can deal with XFX's build quality they make a single slot 5770, there are also a few 9800gt's which are single slot aswell as gt 430's.

Thanks for the help guys...

I ended up ordering a 500W PSU for £40, and a friend had a Geforce 9600GT lying around...so have installed that - i suppose that will do for the time-being...

Atleast its DX10.1 compliant...lol

Many thanks for all your help guys...

OK then, That card has 64 cores,

Even The GT430 Has more cores than that, but if you plan on gaming with your computer, it simply won't do for upcoming games.

My advice, Aim for the GTS 450. It may seem pricey when you buy it, but its about the level your graphics card starts to be game-worthy

@ocho geek
The only problem us that the computer chasis is does not allow for a double PCIe card...only a single...

I was thinking of the 430 but read negative reports on it...that it was too slow etc...i would have gone for the 450 or the radeon 5770 but the problem with the single slot chasis design restricted me...

I guess for the time being this will have to do...i guess it'll work fine for DBPro programmin an FPSC x9 an x10 designing...its not like i'd be creating CRYSIS or the next CryEngine verson 6 - lol...

I'm thinking of building a new system slowly...as my current two systems are stock DELL towers-hence the limitation of slots...but lets see...

Do you think i can cut the second slot from a geforce 450 in order to make it fit single slot? The only thing i would need to cut is the metal plate with the vents ????? The card won't get hot will it....

Not sure if I'm correct on this, but i don't think cases support double width pci cards, i think you just take two expansion slots out form the back of the case. Could be wrong though. Looking at picture of some high end cases as well i see that they only have single width pci expansion slots

You can't cut anything on the graphic card, the rear intake must be there so hot air can go out. I would suggest first buying a decent case, then upgrading your pc. And yes,you need to open another expansion slot to use double width GPU.
