Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think formatting it to convert it is the only way?

Until Microsoft released the conversion command .

Im trying now with admin rights to see if theres any change, already i see one and that is that it is calling my by:
C:\Windows\system32>convert j: /FS:NTFS

you could try a different format utility like gparted. But uh, you should have your files backed up before you convert it anyway. It's very possible your files will not be accessible after you convert. I've had failed conversions many, many times.

In this case,
**Backup any files you want from it first**
remove all partitions from it (including its primary partitions)
make a new primary partition,
reformat it in NTFS.
Should not take more than a few hours.

I would give gparted a try, as that will also run outside of Windows you'll have less issues to consider as you know nothing will be attempting to the use the drive during conversion.

I tried looking up if there was some specific issue with WD's MyBook, but other than several ppl asking how to simply convert them, the standard windows method worked. (despite several people mentioning WD support couldn't tell them how to convert)

Partition Magic can also do the conversion, but gparted will probably be your best bet.

An issue that might cause conversion issues is if the drive is heavily fragmented. Not sure if this is true, but it was something I saw mentioned online.
