Most likely other people, considering the increase of popularity of online games.

That's a good question because even if its not actual people or ai we have sort of used almost all of the themes so far (aliens and zombies are way to over used). More likely I think it will just be more of the same stuff...

Actually, we dont see much zombie games these days, i mean, real zombie games. Which is a shame actually, sure there is dead rising and left for dead, but what else is there? I wish there were more zombie games, and I would personally want to see more zombie games with the.. you know, not shoot everything up, but more of the survival twist, saving your ammo and use melee aswell, avoiding combat for the best you can and simply just focus on surviving and find other people?

Also how do you mean "what will we face after zombies"? With every game I see new designs, like nothin ive seen before! New monsters new enemies new threats!

I'd like to see such a game too. It'd be much more scary if you couldn't fight, so you had to use stealth and tactics to survive.

I really like the idea of a zombie apocalypse that is building a shelter, finding people, and defending against zombie mobs.

I predict in the future we will be fighting lolcats.

I hate when people always say that "surviving against zombies" is "JUST LIEK MINECRAFT LOLZ". Minecraft is not the first game with this idea.

Try Penumbra or Amnesia, you rarely have any weapon at all.

if ur talking about REAL AI, i think that is, in fact impossible, since you still have to program it and when you are programming, no matter what you do, you are setting up rules for what u are doing, therefore no matter how clever AI u make, it will never be a fully "on my own functioning AI" since it still has the rules that u programmed it to follow. You cannot program something without "rules" so to say.

I was actually designing a game like that, where you played the roles of a robotics engineer in a Black Mesa-ish facility. When the AI project goes wrong, you have to make your way out of the facility. You start with no weapons, so you have to make your own, and then once you destroy the robots you can take their parts and make better weapons or even new robots.

What about an AI that can code and evolve itself...that way you'd only write the base, and let it free to grow

I'm not sure I'm ever gonna get bored of blasting holes in lumbering undead fleshbags with a variety of weapons; especially now I have 2 new maps for zombies from CoD:BO

But as an alternative, I think Mutants, vampires, or Robots, or indeed aliens would be alright, as long as they were accompanied by awesome effects, explosions, story line and deathmacth/co-op modes

ROBOT PIRATES!... vs NAZI ZOMBIES maybe.. they kinda have them already

but eah you dont see too many robots these days exept in star wars games

robot pirates is also cool...

i also like vampires idea. mutans.. well there are enough in STALKER, Morrowind also has mutants kindof. like the dagoth creatures and ash vampires. they are all kinda mutant/zombie/vampire hybrids. If only there were Dwemer dagoth creatures, that way they would be robot zombie mutant vampire (because some dwemer are like robot hybrids). also if there ever were dwemer pirates who then caught the blight disease, they could be Dwemer robot pirate mutant zombie vampire. its too bad that there are no nazis in tamrielic lore.

yes but it would still follow the "Rules" the coder wrote, therefore it isnt a real AI so to speak (in forms of AI TAKING OVER THE WORLD BLA BLA BLa)

I'm already tired of zombies! And all manner of aliens and vast armies of jack-booted soldiers and generic terrorists. It's so absurd and unimaginative! Why do we have to fight hordes of anything at all? Why can't we experience really deep, meaningful stories that don't involve slaughtering huge multitudes of generic, cloned enemies with no thought as to the moral implications of said slaughter?

D:

o no u didn't.

It seems like all physical things can be (at least) approximated by a turing machine. eg the brain, and the world it exists in. Computers aren't limited to *artificial* intelligence. They've trained rat neurons to avoid obstacles, and the results appear to be a lot like neural network simulations. The only gap is the structure of the simulation and the computing power. When I talk about "you" or "me", I'm not talking about the mushy stuff in your head, I'm talking about the patterns in your head - which might as well be simulated on a computer.

I watched a movie with the awesome Burt Reynolds and his equally awesome mustache and it was a movie about evil robots. Turns out, there was a bad guy making evil robot computer chips out of 8088s. So yes, evil robots are possible!

Anyways, AI bots would have rules and systems built in just like you and I have rules and systems built in. For example, if you watch a scary movie, you might have a nightmare that night (or 7 days later). That's a rule by anyone's definition. (It's probably a whole mess of rules that are deeply engrained in our DNA somewhere for some reason that we will perhaps one day understand and program into robots).

Tory M... oh

I'd like to see somebody to challenge the Shooter Genre and create something amazing without guns. For example, an proportionately long 12 years ago, A review of Half-Life, which turned in to a pivotal moment in gaming history, The shooter genre was called:
Quote: "Its genre, the first-person shooter, has nearly been beaten to death."

Think about it, take away the shooting genre, even partially, and you end up with a truly memorable game:
-Mirrors Edge
-Assasin's Creed 2
-Portal

Just a few, but all memorable for that reason. Somebody needs to think outside the box, but don't expect the major game creators to do so. As long as the general (lets face it, stereotypical teenager) audience will lap up the repetitive FPS genre, nobody risking money will go for something different.

EDIT: That doesn't really answer the question... Government agents I suppose

Half-Life is almost entirely shooting aliens, how could you not class dozens of green electric-throwing dudes, crabs that turn you in to a zombie, giant tentacle monsters, bad tempered huge fish, walking squids that shoot acid and dog-like creatures with a huge eye cluster and the ability to kill you with simple shockwaves?

As for HL2, I'd say an even more powerful alien race taking advantage of the new rip between worlds to take over the entire planet as a pretty big role.

I wouldn't call that unimaginative, but games are suppose to be absurd so people can break away from every day life. Take all that good stuff out then you may as well just read a book if you want a good story.
