Hey, for my programming project, as usual I'm pushing the boat out and learning how to do lossless data compression.
However, i do not wish to use something like 7zs dll to handle it (cos then what would be the point in bothering to learn it).

My previous idea was kind of flawed, and my next idea of things to try includes indexing strings of texts which appear more than once. And then referring to the index, but the problem is knowing what is an index or a literal number, so to fix that i would have to have some sort of system (i was thinking putting a backslash before so \10 would refer to index 10)

However, i want to know what other people would use for lossless datacompression, this includes text, but also images and other media files.(so essentially it may be more than the standard 8bits)

Smoke me a kipper, ill be back for breakfast.

I would read a book about the techniques. People have spent large parts of their life working on compression so you're better off understanding how its done best rather than trying to do it yourself.
