Havent posted on the forums in like... a year? :/ So I figured Id let people see what I've been up to.

College is going great, Im starting to get hook ups with a lot of people in the industry, and if everything goes well I should have a job doing character animation at Ubisoft Toronto at the end of the year. So that'll be cool.

Anyways, current project right now is animating an interstitial (remember back in the day when cartoons would go to commercial, there'd be a short 10 second scene from the cartoon where one of the characters would say something along the lines of "dont go away, we'll be right back!"? Thats an interstitial).

I was stupid and chose to use transformers, and so began the long process of modeling bumblebee and his camaro along with a city for him to interact with.

Anyways, the goods; here's a video of the transformation sequence for bumblebee (just a quick playblast render in Maya, no special effects or purdy render settings as of yet);

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXOuEz6R9nA

That was the hard part, as I was determined to get the transformation to actually work instead of just using different shots to cheat the effect. Now that thats done with, I need to finish off everything else. If people are interested Ill post back here with the final film in a few days when its done.

Yeah as I said its not done. The problem is it can only be 10 seconds long, and that transformation sequence alone is 10 seconds long so I already have to cut parts out. Im using that sequence as filler for the entire animation, Ill be cutting to a shot with him fully transformed after that one, then continuing on with the final shot.

Thats the assignment. We need to treet it as we would in the industry. If the contract is 10 seconds, and I animate something 11 seconds long, it gets cut.

To the last inocious detail, you have to cover everything and anything they set

Great job on the renders, maybe a higher quality background image would really bring it out.

Have you tired hdri shpere enviroment maps yet?

These are pretty good and well used for scenes plus theres 30 so you can pick an choose

The background is temporary until I finish modelling the environment, at which point Ill be plugging an HDRI map into Maya's global illumination to pump it out even more.

Have you thought about doing the full transformation fast ("real time") but with part of the sequence in slow motion so the detail can be seen? Then you could fit it all in the 10 seconds.

It's looking really good so far. Is it a true to life animation? I.E. Do any parts appear/disappear?

Do oranges know what colour they are?

Yeah Ive been experimenting back and forth with speeding up and going slow-mo for parts of the shot. We'll see what makes it into the final and what doesnt, I still have other parts of the story to fit in that havent been animated at all yet.

Yeah it is true to life though, there are no disappearing or appearing parts. Inside the camaro is a folded up robotic skeleton with various internal parts like the engine, along with a bunch of wires running through bumblebee's entire body.

However, not everything is there. I didnt include the seats or most of the interior of the camaro, its essentially the important parts that would look cool. Seeing a pair of leather seats hanging off of bumblebee's back would just look dumb, which is why Im pretty sure stuff like that isn't even seen in the movie.

Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario (about an hour West from Toronto where I live).

My school is really renowned. Steve Williams (basically the god father of everything that is animation) graduated from Sheridan before computer animation every really existed / took off (in fact he is responsible for pretty much solely inventing the concepts of motion tracking footage and compositing computer animations into real videos, along with many animation principles. Really interesting story, when he got the job working on Jurassic Park, he was hired as a Stop Motion blur animator, because at the time nobody had ever fathomed modeling and animating dinosaurs on a computer and incorperating them into a live action movie, Speilberg had hired a slew of people to create huge robotic dinosaurs to be used in stop motion that Steve Williams would then have to go in and blur each frame for to create a motion blur effect. Long story short, Steve secretly modeled and animated a T-Rex doing a walk cycle at home, made it Speilbergs screen saver at work, and when Speilberg came into the studio and saw it he screamed from excitement, looked at Steve and said "you just changed the world of films and animation", then announced to the entire studio "thats it, from now on the entire movie will be animated, Steve is in charge."). Steve went on to help create Industrial Light and Magic (ILM)'s studio along with Star Wars and a slew of other huge animated pieces.

We've got a 99.something% hiring rate right out of the program (both classical animation and computer animation). The beautiful thing is Sheridan is so well known that at the end of the year, inside one of Sheridan's theatres (yes, we have movie theatres to screen our animations on) over 300 companies (including little names like Pixar, Dreamworks, EA, Rockstar, Ubisoft, ILM, etc etc) come to see our final films and essentially when its all over with walk around and head hunt the animators they liked.

I love my school Im having the time of my life in it, the entire college is primarily geared towards the arts. Ive completed 3 years of classical and fine arts and I was hoping to go into the Classical Animation program last year to get the Bachelor under my belt however opportunity arose when a teacher saw my portfolio and immediately suggested I be bumped to Computer Animation instead since that was my focus, which is what Im doing now.

Ubisoft Toronto just opened it's doors, and they visited our class a few weeks ago letting us know they'll be hiring one student from my class at the end of the year to do character animation for their next xbox title. Apparently right now the teachers feel I have the job, so that should be cool.

Huge sound recording studio... every student gets a dual monitor setup to themselves with amazing specs... free life drawing classes at night, huge sound database, tonnes of famous guest speekers in all year, access to software thats just coming out, so many awesome things .

Plus to top it off we've got an amazing pub right at the heart of the college, and a building dedicated to models (no, not 3D models, hot women models that like to go to pub night and drink the night away... bonus.).

So... I dont wana brag but... I love life right now . Aside from the whole stress thing for the animations (From last Sunday night to Thursday, I got 7 hours of sleep. Total. Thats unheard of!)

<edit>

If youd like to get an idea of what Im working towards for the end of the year, here's a video:
