In the same was as the Wiimote and sensor bar lead to all sort of innovative new tech demos by hardware hacking communities, the release of the Kinect looks like it's going to do something similar, with some exciting possibilities for game devs.
Can you imagine combining this technology with a 3D TV? You could have a cheap solution to producing indie 3D movies, or use it for 3D webcam chatting.
Edit: Thinking about it, you may not be able to use it for real stereoscopic 3D, because unlike 3D cinematic cameras it only records visual data from one viewpoint, and uses two IR cameras for the depth. To get a 3D film then, you'd have to combine depth with visual data, and so you'd get that weird black drop out where it's missing the visual data.
Or the possibility of a cheap 'n' dirty motion capture solution for game developers.
