I dont read much but recentley i really wanted to read something awesome. I am ashamed to say that this book reading nostalgia is spawned by harry potter books which i am ashamed to admit that it was the most fun series i ever read.
I began compiling a list of stuff people reccomend me to read.

wheel of time series
Song of Ice and Fire series
frank herbert dune books (i read the first dune book)
Sword of Truth series Terry Goodkind
Percy Jackson series
The Warrior's Apprentice by Mcmaster Bujould

I began reading "the warriors apprentice" today but stopped at chapter 5 because its about aristocrats obsessed with politics and turning pretty much any subject in the book into a political subject and all they talk about in the book is space politics and while i enjoy a nice space politics backdrop (thats why i started reading the book in the first place) this book so far prooved to be nothing BUT space politics.

so anyone have any good books suggestions? anything you guys read and enjoyed i would be glad to add it to my list and eventually read it.

Epic book series? Try the Nights Dawn Trilogy. Each book is something like 1200 pages, but it's pretty up there on the sci-fi epic scale. Even more than Ender or 2001 if you ask me. Also good and epic is the Hyperion Cantos series of books. Loads really but those two popped into my head out of nowhere...

Cheers

Inheritance series. Eragon, Eldest and Brisingr. If you can get around some of the unoriginal plot twists and some odd parts, they are amazing books.

The Road

One of the best books and movie adaptions ever. (In my opinion of course )

Ender's Game books. About 7 books altogether, really good sci-fi read.

Ah, and the Dark Elf Trilogy.

Nights Dawn Trilogy also got me interested

also i just looked up this interesting thing. The book of new sun series takes place in distant future where the sun begins to cool. I am guessing its like millions of years in the future. This setting really got my attention

Go find some HP Lovecraft collection and read it all and then move onto some Iain Banks, try his classic 'The wasp Factory' and then his sci fi adventure 'The Algebraist'.
I would also recommend some Harlen Coben for some cheap murder mystery thrills.

The booksare great, but the last one hasn't been finished yet. What if he dies or something and it's never released? I wish I hadn't read them yet.

sorry for the sidetrack but speaking of books my friends were reccomending me to buy an electronic bookreader. I think they are just overpriced at 200 bucks being the cheapest one. I have an old PDA that i use as a bookreader. but for 200 bucks i can buy an archos media tablet and mod that as a bookreader. Not only its screen is just as big as on an average bookreader, it has backlight and i can watch movies and play music on it. most bookreaders are actually even more expensive around 300 bucks and up. yet it seemes like everyone has them, i ride in the subway and everyone has a bookreader with them. like why do people buy them?.... i bought a bookreader today anyway...

If you want to read truly epic books, I recommend any series by Stephen Donaldson.

There's 'The Chronicles of Thomas Covenent the Unbeliever' (Tolkein inspired Fantasy) and there's the 'Gap' series (Science Fiction).

Then of course there's Isaac Asimov's 'Foundation' series and Arthur C. Clarke's 'Odyssy' and 'Rama' series.

Lastly I'd recommend Anne McCaffrey's 'Ship Who Sang' and 'Pern' series.

I bet you can't tell what types of book I like lol.

Just started The Nights Dawn trilogy today

Can recommend Peter F Hamilton's Void trilogy that i finished a week ago, squeezed in "Destroyer of Worlds" in between though .
Larry Niven's "Ringworld" series (4 books?, "Destroyer of Worlds" takes place in that same universe) is also recommended.

Then if we talk Sci-Fi you can't got wrong with Heinlein.

A Fantasy series i really liked is George R.R Martin's: "A Song of Ice and Fire". I'd call it "mature" Fantasy where magic and fables seep in gradually. Starts with "A Game of Thrones" that is soon coming as a TV series on HBO, i can't wait!.

I don't read very much fantasy anymore. In fact, I don't even watch any fantasy movies or TV shows anymore (with the exception of Lord of the Rings). Fantasy really only interests me in games nowadays, and even then the less magic the better.

True, it's not the most well written book in the world. But it does quite accurately depict the direction that modern society is headed towards. 1984 is a much better book.

nights dawn trilogy is really cool, i started reading it yesturday (you guys can still reccomend books anyway) but i am not quite sure if the nights dawn just a bunch of short storys or are the first several chapters just like that so they can introduce the setting?

No it isn't. Although I believe he made a short story book afterwards in the same universe. If I remember rightly it was 3 or 4 huge books which I think begins with the Reality Dysfunction, but I'm not sure. It is quite hard to get into because it's lots of different things happening in different places that all come together. I found the first 4 or 5 hundred pages pretty hard going as there is a lot to take in, but then it starts becoming brilliant.

Cheers

i see. there is also the thing with the fancy vocab and grammar they use, also a little confusing how they describe technology. English is my second language so i am not good with any fancy vocab. but never the less i actually like it. the first chapter was epic, altho from how they described it the antimatter explosion should have vaporized the whole cruiser but.. never mind, ill proboly understand it better later in the book

Yeah, takes a while to pick things up. English being my first language didn't really help. He has a habit in those books of going full tilt into the terminology and then expecting you to catch up later by putting two and two together at various points (and often coming up with five). It's a bit frustrating to begin with but after a while it sort of clicks and it is totally worth it. My favourite bits were all the space marine stuff.

Must dig out my books (in another country at the minute ) and read them again. I did a lot of looking back at previous chapters in those books once I realised what he was on about, so re-reading the whole lot again (even though probably around 4-5 thousand pages) won't do any harm

Cheers

It's a bit like that reading Stephen Donaldson's books, especially his 'Gap' series.

You pick up little bits and pieces each time you read them; every now and then the penny will drop and you'll think to yourself "Ah, I get it now" lol

I really like books like that. I can't stand being treated like an idiot by some authors, I prefer books that make you think about what the writer is trying to say.

I recommend the Abhorsen Trilogy (known as the old kingdom series outside of the US) by Garth Nix. A very in-depth trilogy about necromancers. Super awesome.

When I was younger I used to read a lot of Diana Wynne Jones... A lot of it is probably aimed at younger readers, but I remember Hexwood being quite good, and Castle in the Sky.

i asked some people who are fans of postapocalyptic books and they all say that metro 2033 isnt really all that great. the game is really good. Also, i was fixing this guys computer once, the guy is a former Spetznas soldier, and he is a big fan of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. books (and the games) i dont know if they have them translated to english but apperently they are extremeley popular in russia. They even have a whole STALKER extended universe thing too. there is even a series which i first thought was just a STALKER knockoff but as it turns out it is actually part of the stalker franchise exept it takes place in the future when the zone speread out and took over the whole world

S.T.A.L.K.E.R not translated? are u talking about the game? I have played em all, they are THE BEST apocalyptic style games out there. and iam going to order metro 2033 soon, hopefully those fans are wrong =) also i wanna watch the stalker movie from 1970 something. Not much action in it, but cool non-the-less.

Afrert STALKER game came out, the sucess was so huge that they spawned tons of novels set in the STALKER game universe. i am not sure if these novels are translated to english but judjung by their success in russia they should be at least some of them. Also the movie Stalker is kinda cool in a surreal artsy way. the whole movie feels like some kind of dream
