I recently started playing Minecraft and I'm addicted, but I recently updated my operating system from XUbuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.10 and now minecraft refuses to run, I login, the menus load up fine, I select a blank save slot to start a new game and the window just closes immediately without warning. I keep checking the updates every day to see if the problem is solved but to no avail, there have been a few Java updates but none of them have made any difference. As far as I'm aware I'm using the same Java runtime as I was with XUbuntu 9.04.

I will be extremely grateful if anyone can offer help to me and others with the problem.
I will attach the most recent error log so those of you who can understand it can diagnose what the actual problem is.

End of line.

It looks as if the problem is something to do with the ability of the Java runtime to write data but its a guess and I don't know any more than that, I've removed the write protections from the ".jar" file but still no luck. Anyone have any more ideas?

are you running it as yourself in a directory where you have write permissions?

Can you open up the jar from an existing terminal window and advise any errors that occur?

I used to have this problem, I fixed it by:

1. Uninstall any and all linux distros
2. Install the infinitely better than linux and mac, Windows.
3. Enjoy

Pretty simple solution.

Windows better than Linux? I laugh at the idea. But for gaming, I'd have to agree. That said, Minecraft is linux compatible so there's something wrong with your config somewhere.

Well, I have read some books, but more importantly I have some real-world experience

Feel free to email me some links and I'll check em out, and maybe offer a few links of my own. This is hardly a thread about linux vs windows though.

No operating system is better than any other. It's all OPINION.

And it has a lot to do with what one NEEDS. Video editing+other media: Mac. Gaming: Windows. Everything else: Linux.

But that's just my opinion.

Wanna see a fact? Look at the great lengths you have to go through just to get Minecraft running properly, THAT'S A FACT.

Then you will be glad to hear i also had great problems getting minecraft to work on windows

Now, stop trolling and do something productive with your time then bashing an os you probably have little experience with.

To bring bring this close to the origional topic, its probably javas fault its not running correctly, not to do with the linux kernal

(Also just a thought, try modifing some graphics settings?)

Not really it worked fine on the previous version of Ubuntu, Also Linux isn't the operating system it's the kernel. The quality, reliability and performance is dependent on the software built of top of the kernel.

Wanna see a fact? Your fanboyism for Windows doesn't grant you the ability to create facts at will. OMG HE HAD A SINGLE PROBLEM WITH LINUX! IT MUST BE THE WORST OPERATING SYSTEM EVAR!

If people quit using an operating system every time there was a problem, nobody would use any operating system. That's simply the nature of software.

But then again, I guess nobody has EVER had a problem with Windows, right?

Yeah, I blame Linux for two pieces of closed source software not working properly

That makes a whole lot of sense.

Don't be too hard on him though, he's probably still pissed that his unsupported, proprietary software driven wifi adapter never worked.

Does minecraft have any support forums? Have you tried those?
Also, a great source of help could be AskUbuntu.com. I linked to a question that has to do with minecraft but I assume you already did that, so you might just ask a question of your own. You could even try their chat room they have for asking questions for quicker feedback.

@JoelJ I haven't tried asking at any of the forums yet, although I have been looking at forum threads on other forums which seem to be describing the same problem as mine but all the solutions offered to them haven't worked for me. So I might try asking at the official forums and the Minecraft forums and see what response I get, If I don't get any help there I'll try other places and if all else fails I can probably dual boot another OS that defiantly does support Minecraft out of the box. Thanks everyone for you help, if i find a solution i will post on this thread or make another one (I think a lot of people may be having the same problem as me so this should help them out.)

I have just discovered today that there is something broken with default OpenJDK istallaction on Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS. Every application that needs graphic user interface crashes with HeadlessException.

It seems that OpenJDK is actually only partially installed. To fix the installation, run

this will fix the installation and GUI applications will start.

Free software supporters have also used such software when it was way worse than proprietary alternatives. There are other reasons for that.
