Maybe because people exaggerate and the train was probably going about 10mph? It also depends what type of train. If it was designed like a car, with a slope at the front then the kid could have just rolled over. If it wasn't then he could have bounced off the front and the train was going slow enough to stop before it ran over him.
Some people get really lucky during accidents and come away without any serious injuries. The conditions are usually just right for them to survive, it's all explainable and if we had more information on this whole incident then we could figure it out. Either way, what happened to him wasn't as much of a 'miracle' as some other people. I read about a woman who fell from a plane after a hole got ripped in the hull and landed in some snowy mountains somewhere. She was only knocked out from the landing and managed to not freeze to death during the night, she then surviving the following few weeks without any training.
