So i have always heard that the cpu takes any graphics processing and sends it to the gpu. But how does the cpu know what to send to the gpu, if that's true? If that's not true, then how is everything done?

This doesn't magically occur, your program sends the materials it wants the GPU to work with, to it. So there's master slave relationship.

In DB / DBpro, this occurs when you call sync, among other things. During Sync, it batches everything up and feeds the require materials to gpu for you. Hiding this process away.
