Hello

i have a computer here that has failed miserably. Id give up on it but it has some half important files on it.

there are two problems. the first being that the laptops monitor will not display anything. it remains shut off the whole time. right now i have another monitor plugged into the back of the computer and its working fine.

the second problem is a BSOD preventing the computer from booting up. the error reads
Quote: "Page fault in non paged area error"
.

for some reason there are no system backups or restore points. and the system repairs say there are no memory problems. could it be a hardware problem? could the monitor be causing the failure to boot?

please help me. the computer is a Toshiba satellite p100.

for BSOD you can do these things. use the XP boot disk to boot up from the repair console. use these too commands. FIXBOOT, say yes abd then FIXMBR also say yes. then do CHKDSK /F (forgot the formatting but youll figure it out) that can possibly help with the BSOD. if not, you can use an XP live CD or some other live CD to boot it up from a virtual OS and move all your files from the computer to the external HDD

as for the monitor, its quite possible the cable lost contact. i reccomend you to tanke apart your laptop and make sure all the connection from the panel to the lcd inverter to the motherboard are all connected properly. dont be afraid to keep your computer on when testing the connections its important to see if the monitor reacts. if this dosent work, its possible your panel is broken. Unless its from an IBM notebook the monitor panel should be pretty standard as long as the size matches. you can proboly buy a working one on ebay. if this dosent work. its possible that its a hardware problem.
question. When your computer is on and the monitor appears to be dead, if you put it near a bright light and look at it from angles can you still see the darkish outlines of the windows loading logo or the post screen? or whatever is supposed to be going on. because if you see faint images on your screen then it means your backlight is either broken or the connection is somehow bad

Whenever you get a BSOD, I highly recommend checking MSDN's bugcheck code page, like this one for PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff559023(v=VS.85).aspx

Quote: "Bug check 0x50 (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA) usually occurs after the installation of faulty hardware or in the event of failure of installed hardware (usually related to defective RAM, be it main memory, L2 RAM cache, or video RAM).

Another common cause is the installation of a faulty system service.

Antivirus software can also trigger this error, as can a corrupted NTFS volume."

The MSDN pages give decent technical descriptions and name various possible causes which you can investigate

Boot up using a Linux Live CD (for example...) and make a copy of the files you need to keep.

sometimes its hard to find another comp. I had bad luck with linux live CDS because its a pain in the ass to activate the root account on a live cd because without it you cant have acess to the harddrive. I perfer windows live CD.

I get this one, like, 30 times a day. I don't know why, all I know is I just boot up again and it works the second or third try.

well in russia there is this popular distribution called Aklid (or alkid) windows live CD. its a custom made distribution that every IT person here uses these days. i am not sure if there is anything like this in america but in russia there is tons of custom made windows distros and other live CDS like Reanimator which is a bunch of bootable programs you can use to repair your windows. saved my butt a few times when i accedentally deleted the partition with important data on it. this thing just restored the partition tables and it was good as new
