DBP was made open source some time ago, to allow "qualified" developers to make improvements.

Plugins become available whenever anyone in the community comes up with something good and stable. For example...Box 2D

That's what I was wondering... X11? I doubt it. I had been looking forward to X10, then it died.

I bet we'll be seeing a Dark Basic Very Professional some day soon.

I hope lee makes a new compiler... maybe one that can multi thread. The current one is a bit slow, not too bad however. Btw, the current dbp is still very capable, look here

http://www.evolved-software.com/shaders/advlighting

Download the advanced lighting zip and execute the water terrain project (last one) or the terrain edit project and see what I'm talking about. Need a decent computer however.

Its sad that Darkbasic Professional is really showing its age. It was a brilliant experience for me. Its hard to move away from it now. I spent most of game programming time in the depths on UnrealScript these days. But I really want...ANOTHER...DarkBASIC Professional to come out.

DarkBASIC 2.

Sounds brilliant.

Well, thanks for the memories DarkBASIC Pro. I got a job because of you.

I don't think DBP is going to get major updated in the near future. Its on the back burner atm, there's many more exciting projects to work on instead and DBP has already fallen well behind.

Ouch, that's not a comfortable place to be. Most of my work is ripped from Epic games scripts, adapted and cannibalised...

I have no programming ability myself to be honest.

so what should our game PROGRAMMING framework be/have..?

a real programming language
good 2d/3d classes
modern concept

i think here to Truevision3d (long time no updates)
or perhaps Leadwerks engine..

both support c# and have good possibilities.. perhaps i start with one of them

what do you think guys...

Lots of people can't even RUN Leadwerks Editor, let alone play games made in it(are there any?) such as me.

How can you have OOP in a BASIC language? It can't really be called darkbasic is it's not basic, it's always been targeted at newcomers to programming, I believe. If you want a more sophisticated language, why don't you use c++, java, python?

Damn straight. TGC could learn a thing or two from this excellent language.

OOP is best suited to games. Programming games kinda sucks without objects.

I'd like a PHP approach where you can use either procedural or OOP or both.

i think c# and xna are a good combination.
good for 2d.. in combination with FLATREDBALL engine (2.5D).

but what i am missing is a good and "easy" 3d gamelib.

I dont want to use an "editor" like unreal or unity3d...

Learn C#. That's what I am doing right now. It isn't too hard, but DBPro is much simpler.

C# is good because it has OOP and the XNA Game Framework.

It's also free, and there's a ton of tutorials on its webpage to help you start learning.

It's the next language I'm going to use to program games in, once I finish my little platformer with DB Pro.

C# isnt really for games, its mainly designed around formal applications. Because of its premade functions it means it isnt exactly speedy gonzales.

Maybe It's just the Yoda picture.
Anyways, somewhat on topic, is there OpenGL for C#?

I don't care much about DBPro language improvements anymore (arrays in types, etc). The compiler could be sped up so it doesn't take forever on a 8k+ line project, though.

What I'm worried about is by the time my game comes to light, a DX9 based game will need to be run via emulator!!

I think c# is a microsoft product, so I can't see it running under any other operating system, so it may as well run dx. I'm not sure though.

doesn't c# run on the xbox? Best to use xna and c# if you're going to use c# in the first place.

C# can be used for anything as far as I'm aware. Mostly PCs and XBOX 360s though.

I think DBP should be viewed as an older language for writing games aimed at older spec machines. Just because it's lacking the newest tech doesn't mean it's not capable of making decent looking highly playable games, so I think it's totally viable to target older PCs with DBP games and be very successful.

they should definatley make a good editor for it to simplify object placing and stuff. wait i got a better idea! integrate an editor with the comp[iler, i mean the code writer thingy in which yoiu write the code. so like integrate a real time 3d editor to the development enviroment like if you change something in the editor, the code changes for it as well. it would be sortof like visual basic or visual C++. exept it would work on dark basic. that would be totally awesome!

You don't have to use the editor, if you're insane enough you can create the levels in notepad. Good luck with that though.
