Yet Mac's exist, and Apple make an absolute killing... strange.

My new Netbook looks a bit like a macbook, the new dells are looking a lot like Mac's, and there's about 500 Android pad's that try so hard to be as good as the iPad. If Apple are really so bad, then people should stop copying them. It's like the rest of the industry has run out of ideas, and they just watch Apple to work out what to do next, what to do worse, and what to do cheaper to stay afloat. I can't even remember the last original PC thing that didn't originate mostly with Apple - maybe that humping dog USB toy. Before slating Apple, why not cite some examples of what Microsoft has done recently to improve technology, besides changing 2 digits on Office 2007 to make it 2010.

@Van B
DirectX - Servers - C# - ASP - VS - msdn - silverlight - XNA - Windows Live - IIS - W7- Cloud - Aero - qualifications to name the big ones. (DX11 has a huge performance increase than the previous versions).
And since you said Microsoft and not Windows: 'Xbox360' Which even though didnt start the Achievement system, it sure made it popular.

Apart from widgets, i dont see what microsoft copied from Mac. Im pretty sure microsoft started the taskbar and icons. And i have absolutely no idea what Mac have done good recently that benefited the market, apart from the iPad and iPhone, but this is a discussion about computers operating systems. (and even then the Andoid is starting to show up trumps over the iOS)

technology

By technology, I don't mean bloated software packages, languages, or engines - I mean the hard bits that people interact with that you can't just buy out from smaller companies.

And let's not start on what Microsoft stole from other companies to make their OS. But please provide some proof that Microsoft gave us servers, I'd love to read that.

Just because it isn't a ground breaking discovery, doesn't mean it hasn't positively effected the industry. And if you think Mac didn't steal anything, then why is their Operating System a spawn of Unix?
Apple has only been an obstacle for developers with its lack of support for software, and its refusal to continue to support DX and OpenGL efficiently. (Mainly because they make the process of customizing your computer painful)

I'm a PC. I have no resell value after my warranty expires.

"And if you think Mac didn't steal anything, then why is their Operating System a spawn of Unix?"

Apple has never tried tried hide that their OS is Unix based. As a matter of fact it is a selling point. Here is a quote direct from their website.

"Mac OS X is the world’s most advanced operating system. Built on a rock-solid UNIX foundation and designed to be simple and intuitive, it’s what makes the Mac innovative, highly secure, compatible, and easy to use. Quite simply, there is nothing else like it."

There are two kinds of computer users. Those that use Macs and those that wish they did.

On the grounds that it is cheaper? or better?

It's easy to get cheap or free software for Android wheras you have to mostly pay for Apple stuff - but that's no argument at all. What will happen when Android store basically turns into an Apple store clone - things won't be cheap or free forever.

Understand that we have these threads all the time, full of sideways opinions based on nothing but internet gripes and satire. I'm not trying to incite anything, but you seem to be avoiding solid facts and re-iterating what the interweb haters are saying.

My brother told me the other day that he doesn't think the Mac OS is as good as Windows7, but he couldn't give me one single reason why. From my POV, OS's are all the bloomin same - to the point where it feels like they move buttons around just to be a bit different from their competitors. I have no desire to care that much about an OS, I'd rather just get on with using whatever machine does the job. And honestly, the Mac is far more reliable, to an almost rediculous degree (I leave it on 24/7, only reboot for updates about once a month) - that counts for a lot in my book.

I tend to go on business ethics, tbh I don't like Apple or Microsoft on that basis even though both of their products seem to have their benefits and drawbacks. I'm personally trying to migrate to Linux as much as possible at the moment but keep getting held back by compatibility but I keep seeing an increasing amount of software and applications being developed for Linux, it may only be a matter of time until its a viable replacement for Windows. I think I'll be boycotting windows when support is completely dropped for XP, from that point on XP will mostly be used for gaming and not much else.

End of line.

This will inevitably end in an OS-related flamewar...

^ Hilarious. Truly hilarious. Literally all of those things are based on the ideas of other companies, or outright duplicate technologies that existed previously, in most cases years before MS even entered the same sector (DX, C#/.NET, Silverlight and Aero in particular)

I was referring to the sales, the droid overtook the iphone.

Quote: "Understand that we have these threads all the time"

I know we do, ive been using this forum since like May 08.

Quote: "re-iterating what the interweb haters are saying."

It is as if you are accusing me of giving my arguments ill-thought and that i have joined an 'anti mac' cult.

Quote: "I leave it on 24/7, only reboot for updates about once a month"
- Thats really a hardware claim, not really the operating system.

Quote: "Literally all of those things are based on the ideas of other companies"

I clearly stated benefited the industry. Microsoft work on them has benefited the industry, and so i fail to see your point.

However, this argument need not go on, it clearly isn't going to get anywhere anyway.
I just want to make it clear though, that the Mac OS itself may not be bad, but the way Apple controls it is what i have the problem with.
And I'm sorry if you took it personally.

Why does everyone shun Microsoft? You can't do what they've done. And if you can, why haven't you? Money? They built their own fortune. Same as Apple, they built their own fortune.

I'm a PC and somehow I knew that this thread would turn into a MS/Apple/Linux flame war. And it probably won't end until a moderator with sufficient maturity locks it.

Personally I have not seen a good OS since the Commodore 64 days Even then the C-64 had a graphical OS called GEOS. I hated GEOS.

I actually like Apple products, it's their overpricing, smug consumer base and advertising I detest.

Mac owners are the kind of people who have those canvas bags that say "I am not a plastic bag" on them. I cannot describe those people accurately without breaking the AUP. Okay obviously not all Mac owners are like that, but the smug brigade are always first in line to jump on the bandwagon of crap like apple's marketing.

I couldn't agree with you more, but I choose just to ignore them and move on. I like my Windows 7 machine, and I don't think I'm going to buy a $1000 IMac in a while.

yes thats almost exclusively the answer

Indeed, have you ever seen a more depressing sight than an apple store, 10000 people crammed into a small store glaring at a macbook like it was an oracle of truth

I'm a PC, and lets be honest, the only choice is me or a mac

. kinda makes me angry that all everyone is copying the mac looks. just personally i dont like the apple iphone design, but most of todays modern mobile telephones atre trying to look like an I phone. I wanna buy a modern cool/unique looking phone but almost everything looks like an iphone. I am also sick of the whole tochscreen thing. I prefer normal buttons to tochscreens but everything these days is tochscreen. on older smartphones (before the iphone) they had tochscreens but they also had buttons that allowed you to navigate just as good without using the tochscreen

I'm surprised some people think that because Apple make lots of money they must have good products. I'm not saying they don't, but profits are not a valid indicator of quality. Also, the fact other companies copy their design is because of their success, again this does not mean they are the best.

Am I the only person that doesn't care how the tower looks? It's underneath a desk, I wanna see what's on the screen - that should look good!

I have no qualms against Apple. I just hate the way they've hypnotised everyone into believing the iPod is actually worthwhile.

Also I hate Mac owners. It's just whenever I talk to one, and say I have a PC with Vista, they snigger and start talking nasally about how many viruses I must get, how it blue screens every day, and how slow it must be, which it is none of those.

Aside from my phone... my iPod is easily the next most used product I have. Just because you don't have a use for it, doesn't make it not worthwhile.

Go to a gym, you'd be lucky to see 5 people in there without an iPod.
