What does everyone think of the news that Microsoft is planning on releasing windows 8 on ARM processors.
From what i have seen it looks as though it may be the full release although I've heard a lot of people mention that they think it will probably a stripped down version like Windows XP embedded that will run on ARM chips.

One thing that I am curious about is weather or not it will be open to consumers to easily install windows on an ARM platform like it is on X86 or will vendors have to reprogram the software for the specific hardware and therefore only offer the software preinstalled.

End of line.

Makes sense, if MS want to continue having a hand in everything, then they need to bring their software products to the latest buzzword platforms of the day. In other words they need to be where the users are.

In the old days yes, software products were tied to the architecture they ran on. Today, not so much..

I'm a bit unsure because mobile phones have to have the operating systems modified specifically for the hardware but i suppose that's due to a lack of standardization across the board. For an ARM PC platform there would need to be standardization in terms of hardware like x86,I certainly hope its as open as x86 in terms of user friendlyness but i suppose its a case of 'wait and see'.

OS's (generally) need to be built for the architecture it runs on, and traditionally so does the software. Assuming we're talking about native (pre-compiled to ARM) code, but this is not the case today. Where any number of systems use intermediate byte code / common language states to detach themselves from the underlying hardware.

As long as they still develop for x64 and x86, i don't mind.
