Just getting some crits on this rig i put together for a friend. £800 budget and its just within it so.

From Over clockers UK;

AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1055T 2.80GHz
GeIL 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3
XFX ATI Radeon HD 5830 1024MB GDDR5
NZXT Phantom Enthusiast Full Tower Case
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB
Samsung CD/DvD/RW

From Amazon;

Corsair CMPSU-500CX 500W
ASUS Crosshair IV Formula - AMD 890FX
Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme Rev.2

Total cost £804.02 Delivered.

Any reccomendations or changes to the setup? Ive had to knock what he wanted from £1800 to this so ive made a few cuts in some areas like GPU and CPU. I think ive done pretty well anyway.

Don't you think the 6 core is unnecessary, considering 4 core isn't even fully utilized by most programs yet?

The Intel i7 had 8 logical cores so I guess 6 cores is ok. Multi-tasking ftw.

12 gigs of ram seems overkill. I'd go with 8 or 6 and get a better video card, as I haven't read anything good about the 5830.

Any reccomendations on the card ?

MSI GeForce GTX 460 HAWK "Super-OC" 1024MB

Never mind just seem above lol

Edit again# Ram dropped to 6gb to fix the budget.

Personally, I'd spend the few extra dollars and get a WD harddrive over the samsung. And I'm more of an Intel/Nvidia kinda guy. The case, however, I actually like. Looks pretty extreme compared to my normal taste in cases, but it's snazzy!

I put 4GB in my system from over 3 years ago, cost me $200 at the time! Most told me 2GB was enough, which at the time it was. But only recently have I begun to reach the limits of the 4gb. So if you want to look to the future, stick with 12gb if it's within budget. Plus, you can always use the extra ram for a ram box, if anyone even remember what that is.

Go for 6-8gb of RAM,a Geforce GTX460 and try to fit in an Intel i5 2500k and ASUS mobo into your config.

I would agree with the faster GPU idea.. depends on your budget. Im not an intel fanboy but when i looked into it for my build the low end i7's like the 920 and 930 were beating some of the decent xenons for around 40 (quid) more than your phenom.

If only you could've stuck with the £1800 limit, then you'd have an i7-980X, 12GB DDR3-1600(triple channel), two GTX 580 1.5GB. Now that would be a sweet build.

you never met my old coworker. He probably spent a few hundred every month upgrading his rig. And i mean literally every month he'd buy something new, either the latest graphics card or another monitor

Blah. Anything that supports dual-core supports any core (generally speaking). The question (again, generally) isn't if you support 2 cores or 4 cores, it's if you support concurrency.

i would spend that much money on a PC. the more money spent now, the less money spent down the line. such a computer would be good for another 10 years

you simply can't future-proof a computer for 10 years, and you can barely keep it top-spec for 3

bot if you buy an i7 995x extreme (6 cores with HT so its like actually 12 cores (showes up as 12 cores on your computer) 3.6ghz 12 mb of cache (this cpu isnt out yet... i think)
as well if you buy the best mobo for it and like 12 gigs of memory. The only thing you have to worry about is videocards. those tend to go a bit faster than other hardware.

A $6k system from 10 years ago would pale in comparison to a $1k system of today.

ok maybe i overdid it with the 10 years. but 5 years for sure. a 6k system from 5 years ago would still be pretty nice today. considering that in 2006 they made a serios jump with multicore systems and dx10. a cor 2 extreme is still really nice today. Hell even a top of the line dual core CPU from 2006 is pretty niuce. I still have a pentium D 3.4 ghz and thats like more than 5 years old. and its still really nice. i used it to play crysis on full settings (of course that was with a 5870 but still)

No, i don't think 10 years is over kill too much. You of course will be replacing hard drives and maybe ram as you go, but if you get good hardware and take care of your machine, I wouldn't be surprised if the computer lasted you 10 years.

I've got a computer that was well over 5 years old before the PSU blew out. I thought it was the motherboard so I finally replaced it. Haven't tried using the old stuff since I got a new PSU though. But I wouldn't be surprised if it worked fine.

My wife has had a MacBook Pro she got 4 years ago, and it's better than almost any new laptop I've used/seen that cost under $1k.

My first computer lasted 9 years and that was 1.8gz, 1gb+512mb ram 20gb hdd and a 128mb gpu. With that i could run PS 7 easily and CS1, barely, along with ac3d and a few other modeling kits. It was the only reason why i know how to build/repair a computer since when it went down, it went down hard

Edit;

My mate getting final approval from his mum's tech friend, then itll be all good. Did you the fella wanted to charge £60 to put it together?? pfft i was going to do it for free the robbing bugger!

http://forum.pcstats.com/showthread.php?36200-For-sale-top-of-the-line-gaming-computer-cheap-lol

Haha, top of the line.

Probably worth 200 bucks now? Some of the parts might still be expensive, like the CPU, only because their rare and can be used to upgrade an existing machine cheaper than buying new, but still sub-standard by a good margin.

Sure, that computer will be pretty good for 10 years, but not as a gaming machine.

Those raptor drives would still cost a few bucks. It's almost 5 years old and already we're laughing at it! I'm sure it'd still play games fairly well, as it's similarly spec'd to mine that I have now (built in '07) and it plays most things fine.

I liked the one guy's comment on that forum, I'll give you $20 but only if you pay shipping!
