Well, it *is* an MMO.... and MMOs *generally speaking* cost a monthly charge.

So what? No need to post about it really. Its a kinda thing where, if you can't afford it, don't buy it. Most mmo's cost (well the good ones.)

what do you expect to pay the server costs? You see one reason, aside for the obvious making money part, to why some decides to have monthly fees is, that the servers COST money OVER TIME, therefore a monthly cost is, imo, obvious. and they can therefore also update the game more regularily and spend more money to it.

At least it might stick around for a while, unlike APB, which is a glaring example of how not to do an MMO. What you are paying for is support and future updates. If you consider how much gameplay you get for £40 with the usual PS3 titles, then consider how much gameplay you'll get with this, it's much easier to justify the subscription.

If you pay $200, you can get the game without a subscription for a lifetime.

But that's just saying how much do you trust DC Universe to get better with time? StarTrek Online did the same thing.

I would happily pay £10 a month for better servers on FIFA 11. People tend to do things better when you pay them properly.
I was more put off this game by the terrible CGI "demo" which was a long boring video of DC characters trying to blow each other up, it didn't reveal anything about the game at all.

[edit]

Having said that about FIFA 11 the servers are 100 times better than last year. The problems are probably more to do with inefficient game code.
anyway, this isn't about FIFA

No its not , its just an "mo", nothing massive about it apart from the size of the map.

Two things that make a game an MMO:
1. There are more than a handful of player
2. The Game World is always running

If something like minecraft supported 100 players, you are starting to get into MMO territory.

Not at all, it's just a multiplayer game. There are many free-to-play MMOs on PC nowadays, but I have yet to see one on the console.

I know its a tad off topic, but I'm really worried about SW:TOR's payment system, Subscription would put me off a lot, and in game purchases usually de-value gameplay

Guild Wars is an MMO. And Guild Wars 2 is out soon (which will also have no subscription fees).

Imagine this: Soon all games will have subscription fee's because they need to keep the DRM servers online

That would be like an alternate universe
