Sorry found my answer..

You can use an OEM Key with a full install disc, but you have to use phone activation.

That is what I understood from this anyways.

I have done that a few times. It works great and you can easily get rid of all the unwanted bloatware that seems to come preloaded on most new Microsoft OS machines. It is all computerized and you don't have to talk to anyone when you call.

There are two kinds of computer users. Those that use Macs and those that wish they did.

oh nice. That's good to know. I'm fixing my friend's computer, and we can't find the OEM disk anywhere.

If it is a store bought computer, and it has a windows serial key stick on it. Look at what it is suppose to have installed on it, xp, vista or Win7. You can use a full windows install disc and just enter that key on the sticker and you should be good to go.

Yes, nearly all manufacturers put a sticker with the windows CD key on it.

Including mine, which isn't the correct key if you try and reinstall, but maybe I'm wrong and it's specific to me.

Thanks for clearing that up .

I managed to get the actual key for my installation using some program that scans the registry ( or something ), I can't remember what it was called, but the key didn't match the one on the case.

That is strange, maybe the Mobo was swapped out at some point.
Did you get everything straightened out though?

I call him "The Brave Little ... Toasted". I made him for my avatar here at least 5 years ago now

I had problems in the past with trying to use an XP SP1 key with an XP SP2 disk or vise-versa. So you have to be careful with that, too.

I've had some stickers work with another CD and some that don't. They do seem to be pretty version specific.
