I want to have a device that I can go online with and browse web sites. I know the Android tablet has wifi, but does that mean I have to connect to a wifi connection or can I say, pay for a monthly bandwidth allowance and browse the web anywhere, just like moblie internet?

You always need to connect to an internet connection.
Mobile internet usually goes via the telephone company and therefore costs more money.
Most stores and places over here have their own internet connection that they allow people to connect to.

Could I plug in a mobile internet dongle into an android tablet to get wireless internet? Or do they not support them?

You could get the Samsung Galaxy Tab with the $30 2GB data plan:

I'm from the UK though, and that tablet is a bit pricey, rather pay £75-130.

EDIT

Just got £15 off of this! I'm quite pleased too.

It says optional 3G in the specifications, I'm wondering if a 3G mobile broadband dongle would work?

Yeah, I would never pay that much for a tablet myself. I can't answer the 3g dongle question unfortunately.

However, you may want to wait a few months. A bunch of Android 3.0 tablets will be coming out relatively soon since Android 3.0, built for tablets, was recently announced. However, if you must have one now, be sure to check out Amazon. They have a bunch of Android tablets.

I've already bought the one I linked to, unfortunately. Then again I only want it for the time between jobs and to remotely manage my game servers. Hope 3G works though, be silly if it doesn't as it is basically listed in the specs.
