so i couldnt hold back on my love for ancient electronics so i decided to buy this (pic in the download) a motorola micro tac cellphone. I bought this for 100 bucks. the reason its so expensive is because back then cellphones were rare in russia where i live so it has a good antiqe value sortof, they are still very rare. The 90s in russia were famous for being an era of lawlessness so these "brick" cellphones here are usually associated with gansters because they are the only ones who had them.

so i was thinking of modding this thing into something cool but i havent decided yet. My ideas were making it into a regular cordless phone if i can figure out how. making it into an mp3 player (already did something like this before so it should be easy)

so if anyone knows any cool thing i can mod this into i am all ears

it does work, the battery only lasts for 2 hours but the problem is there is no power supply for the charging station

The charging station will be easy to fix. BUT KEEP THE PHONE AS IT IS. The way things are going now. In 20 to 30 years. All my kids are going to be like "What the heck? You had to hold a phone when you were young?" and the value goes up and up and up. Also its not just about value its a good piece of history

when i was in US, i used to scavange the dumps for computer parts people threw out and there were a lot of really old computers as well as cellphones and other stuff. i never payed attention to it thinking it was just old crap. but when i moved to russia where old tech from 80s- early 90s is actually very rare (that server tower in the backround of the cellphone picture is from 1989 the only reason i could even find one is because it was decomissioned from the american embassy. Servers like that were still extremley rare in russia in the early 90s) Anyway now i am in deep regret that i didnt take a bunch of ancient computers and cellphones and ship em off to russia where i could have sold them to collectors for good money.

I could probably find a few of those for $1 at any thrift store around town. ($10 on ebay)

i know but in russia this kindof stuff is rare and has some significant historical value. In US i could get this for free in a recycling center where they trow out old cellphones i already said that.

before the 90s pretty much any imported electronics was black market only as USSR was a closed country. in the early 90s many crooks and orgonised criminals took advantage of this and started importing electronics computers and cellphones to russia and selling them for 10x the regular price as there werent any official retailers of this stuff yet. it was only untill mid 90s when this stuff became widley avaliable and still only the wealthy and the mafia had these because by that time everyone else was already dirt poor. so the market for them was still pretty small

I'd bought an old motorola phone (1999) for 5 dollars. It turned out it used to belong to a man who had a very explicit personal life which had him killed (look up herman rockafela)

wow thats interesting. The fun thing about antiqe devices is there might be a cool story behind them. unfourtunatley i dont know the story behind my phone, but i am 75% sure it was owned by a gangster. only they had phones like that in 1992-93. if it wasnt a gangster it might have been someone like a banker or some government official. altho russian government officials tent to not like newer technology. most of the government untill recentley worked old school trough paper documents. One reason to like our new president Medvedev is because he is young and likes technology. so he is now trying to restructure the government to work trough new high tech stuff. The guy is actually really cool, he has his own facebook and twitter and his personal video blog. Also he loves classic rock. In an interview he even shared that his son likes Linkin Park a lot. When he stepped into office immediatley i noticed the presidents office table how has a kickass computer with a 50" monitor.

but yeah its fun to know the back story of old stuff

no but i got a kickass looking burn on my right arm from a heated clothing iron when i was little. That reminds me i knew a guy once who had only 3 fingers on his hand it looked like one of those alien hands
