Hi guys

This is my first thread so hope I get it right... and I hope am not going against the forum rules in any way here... please just delete this thread if it seems I am doing so, I mean only good with this post.

What I am offering:
Free web-sites created and designed by me (yes I am a web-designer among other things) hosted for free too for as long as you want it to stay hosted (however, there will be a system of sorts where if you do not make any updates for say for example 6 months and you make no mention of interest in it or you simply say you want me to pull it... it will be archived in a zip file (so you can retrieve it) but never deleted until you confirm you want it deleted once you have the archive files {more on this in the legal section once the website is up}, and another clause will be made clear later in this post.)

The hosting platform is a world class business package that I use for my own business web-site it boosts a Tier 1 network with 50,000 Mbit connectivity, so it’s pretty fast and stable and is hosted in the UK.
O.K. enough of the details for now you can ask me questions on the platform whenever...

Now on to the reason for my giving-ness ^^.

I am fairly new here, only started posting properly this month (January 2011) helping wherever I could... and started with DBPro and other TGC apps since early September as that’s around when I came into knowledge of TGC and its great products namely DBPro with which I hope to forge a career of sorts in the coming future.

Hands up for TGC. I do not want to get into too much background here hehe so I shall move on... but I just want to say here in my first thread... I want to buy a T-Shirt that says I TGC {logo obviously} willing to pay £10 for it with free delivery (Oh make sure it gets that multi product 5% discount ^^ so I can buy something else when I buy it, or buy it with something else... lol whichever way round you prefer.. hehe.)

I have been pondering for a few weeks and also made mentions on a couple of posts through the forum, to become a team player here with fellow TGC Dev's if I may say . I would like to put my talent and current opportunity as I have a huge web-site hosting package with massive bandwidth sitting there making no move beyond some 1-5% each month so I figured instead of selling that bandwidth I could put it to some good use, this is where you guys come in.

Up until last night I had been thinking how can I make this worthwhile for both myself and fellow Dev's, I had struck on what I believe to be a fair deal and would like your opinion/feedback on this.

I was thinking as I am still new and the forum is for helping... I am struggling in some code writing as well as other areas and we can only specialize in certain areas so much. That if I could get your help I could in turn provide the above mentioned service as a return as it is pretty much the best thing I can offer. Oh and I have 1500 email boxes sitting there with not much to do ^^ business class email is beautiful (ask me more about the Military grade 4096-bit encryption on the emails lol (POP3/IMAP compatible).

As well as code perhaps models, and textures and maybe the odd art work perhaps... each with their own rewards... more on that next. Obviously, as well as having your own rights to using the created content. {more on this in legal}

Ok onto the rewards tallying system I devised...
I had not posted anything on this until now because I did not see making web-sites for free with no advertising aside from saying hosted by (me) at the bottom with a link to my web-site and no income coming from it, I felt I knew there was something I could get from it, and this is what I feel is right for it...

So I had thought of the following last night,
I thought of first needing some sort of per page points (meaning if you reach a certain number of tally points which obviously are deducted once work is complete per page meaning like a home page or contact page-as well as extra content), like a reward point card for any high street store, so I thought asking too high a point tally for various work in return was unfair, so I thought in respect of the code work for say DBPro or even LUA/Unity say for every 20 lines of proper code, that’s functions and actual effect code, not SET DISPLAY MODE etc... actual code including the Function functionname() line and endfunction line just to give you an idea obviously spaces excluded and a minimum set of characters so things like ELSE, OR, SELECT are obviously not included... but I will count the function...endfunction lines in this respect (obviously I will be making a clear cut details page on the related web-site on this and I am just skimming and running some not so solid ideas right now and obviously these are always subject to change).

So for a whole page with basic content like layout, text, colour scheme and a few images, no galleries or forms or other advanced features, will cost you say 10 tally points. (so not bad roughly £50 worth of work for something as simple as maybe 100 lines of code {not fixed on this amount yet - I need to run a trial period and see if the work reflects the value so as mentioned before, subject to change} - I am sure someone is saying something like “ nice! ” around about now ^^.

And to make this more interesting I thought of creating a public or if you guys prefer access secured page with a table chart of all participants and their current accrued / spent / remaining credit tally’s, as well as related data on what specifically they created, like DBPro code xxxx lines, .x model xxx created , and art work submitted, might even go as far as creating a sub-page for each participant and make all of the code and work we don’t mind being public available for download, just to give it that added community spirit and can maybe create banners for it, though I don’t know how to use image banners in these forums yet ^^.

Other features for your sites could include Flash galleries, with predefined number of images so you need to spend x amount of tally points to add more images or get java based galleries for fewer points compared and maybe a flash video for xxx points and perhaps an actual trailer video for your developments for xxxx points... (There will be a page with needed code/content/assets and I think it will work best if I ran some sort of request system eventually instead of several people trying to write the same code and submitting it and trying to be the first one to submit... I would hate to almost waste your time and skills. {By almost waste your time... I mean you did find a solution to a new problem ^^ time well spent no matter what anybody says})

So without going on with too much detail and making an honest pledge here and now that this is not going to be one of those here now gone tomorrow things and hopefully it will become a sticky one day to stay on top of the forum forest ^^, I am certain this can work for all of us and I believe strongly that the professional appeal of these web-sites compared to other free sites... you know the ones... this is a solid offer with massive potential.. For all of us... oh and of course I will help you with other web related things like helping you setup your first domain purchase and correctly forwarding it to your new web-site to make it look like its privately hosted. (this is also dependent on if you take the domain handler which I specify as I use it myself otherwise I cannot help with this as I will not know the menus hehe) and one last note, of course you will have a credit naming in all of my productions regardless whether or not I used anything you provided to me via this process, be it a Movie production or a game/app, you will have a special thank you placement in all future productions for having helped me, I never leave any help towards me unrewarded.

Yeah sure there is plenty of free code out there and across the forums’ but being able to have it oriented to my production is a whole different ball park. So I do not expect this kind of code for free.

Oh and before I forget, about the clause for the hosting thing, I was thinking if you had not submitted anything beyond 1-3 things I would archive the site after like 3 months... but as I said I will forever credit you in my productions and as too shall I the web-sites... so the archiving is optional.

I intend to make Software Development my full time work, so I will be able to devote all my time to this as well as my own projects (hence the pledge).

As for trying to bargain with "lines of code", keep in mind different coders can solve the same problem in different amount of lines. If I wrote something 2k lines, someone else might be able to do it in 1k lines. If you need help with code, just ask us. We don't require bargaining.

Yeah, umm true about the resulting code sized... but its about being object oriented, so designed specifically for a WIP, so I feel its rewardable... of course free support is welcome... and I love this forest of a forum, it will take me like a year to even skim through it and believe me I tried a few weeks earlier...

but as I said its a thought of project still in its infancy, and as I have only just began coding, I need some kind of kick start until I can get to grips, yet should it lift off I will keep it going.

(I have a lot of detail to go through, but I got a meeting shortly now ... speak soon - can not wait to get the dell streak 7 inch then I can be on these forums 24/7 )

oh and ofcourse, if they do hit many hundreds of lines of code, DATA entries dont count as I will surely be using STYX to enable ini reading for better stability (I hope that is the best option hehe - please correct me where neccessary I welcome cristicism, you never learn from praise )

as to what I am working on, I think my first game will be racing based,, so I can get to grips with AI and perhaps break into advanced AI to start with I reckon it will present some massive challenges for anybody helping as I dont plan to be making a simple racing game... think traps ^^. as well as Physx/ODE, btw is ODE that NEWTON engine everybody speaks of often? or is it the one that comes with Leadwerks game Engine?

As with the ini STYX relative umm, convo... I had a look at STYX and think it has some potential as well as I think it can be used to create game protection... were indie developers, pirating will hurt us way worse than big corporate industries, but I am obviously also understanding that yes it does hurt them that some employees end up getting laid off and such, and piraters should realise this... and this being a semi-political topic I will end it there... however I think Gaming Politics is true Geek Culture so I think it should be ok to say so and in regards to the copy protection its strange but it was one of the first things that came into my head back in October/September when i first encountered a new found love (TGC ^^) so I think an interesting challenge would be to create some sort of anti-piracy tool perhaps?

oh also umm I am not just doing websites ^^ Video, some flash etc... I am yet to compendiate a list of my skillset... not an easy thing to do hehe.

I second what others have said. You don't really need to offer people a direct swap or implement a system whereby you get code for web space. If you just get stuck into DBP, following the free tutorials, code snippets and various codebase websites, you'll be off to a good start. You can then hit the DBP forums and ask questions and people will help you.

You definitely won't be able to make a game from coding favours, so swapping web design for code chunks won't get you far. You really just need to get stuck into it and start learning.

Regarding your webspace, you could still offer a web hosting system to the members here. Let people make their own websites and make use of your bandwidth, but spend your own personal time learning to develop games (if that's what you want to achieve). That'll be good for your reputation and karma here.

If I've learnt one thing as a game dev it's ultimately the only person you can rely on consistently is yourself (and when motivation goes, not even that!! ) and there's no substitute for learning how to do it all. The only other way is to have a lot of cash and pay people lots of dollar!

Words of a Guru, thank you I agree, its just I like to reward good people, and I saw it as a fun way to do it too and I noticed a lot of people are using free and automatic editors to do their web-sites... and I find that dissapointing, those editors are soo bad and then theyre hosted on a platform that tried to market so much on the site that you put so much effort into making and they do not do revenur sharing... so I figured I would put my skill to some use... and help them create websites of quality and well optimised for SEO... oh and about the code its because I would like to get some help 1: to have it coded as ready code to cut and drop when needed with other code, and b: so I can get work underway on my first project to get a beta out there, I will be asking for a lot of help in the begining and I hope to make enough off the first project to eventually make something worth it, and Like I said I like to help good people. wow... breath I did not realise how much I wrote...

if it helps I am looking to learn how to create character controls (moving the camera along with a character and making movement react to the world around it... I have Hands on Vol. 1 and 2, but it does not cover this , kind of surprised it doesnt in detail... figured this was a big aspect of game development ^^ if possible please point me in the right direction

also after that I have a few quarms to solve... and in regards to making that space available to others... I will need to create an application where they can upload their files without needing to consult me all the time... I was thinking create a predefined application using ftp function of dbp of course with login access prebuilt and also folder predefined, all they need to do is link and select which files they want to delete and upload... I think I will need STYX for this right?

I just dont know if I have the cash to pay another £20 for it tomorrow... I need pay for my huge hosting in feb lol, and could you recommend anymore addons for me? I am buying DarkNet DarkData (which im still confused as im also buying LUA/Unity) LUA/Unity and also EZRotate this coming week, so wondering if there are any others I may require- I will only be missing Texture max which I think I will be needing for my first project just not right now so might get it the following month, enhanced animation and and box 2d which I am still confused about... was wondering if nuclear glody was any good for fast paced games?

hmm ill leave more for later hehe, but I just want everyone in this forum to know, I respect you all (both the long termers and anybody from recent to joiners in the future), for both your helpfulness and commitment to ... making great apps hope i can get the help I need in here...

Currently I am pretty snappy at product landing pages, small business sites, promotional micro sites.. (promotional- ie.. sites focused to show off game and movie trailers, digital product promo deals, you get the picture)

I can work up a few different wire frames in the next week or so if you are interested. (given it has been crunch time on my schedule here lately)

It takes me a bit longer to code than to design, but that is mainly do to the fact I slice as small as I can and try my hardest to find css solutions to replace as much actually imagery as I can in order to cut down on file size and page load times.

As of now I work with PS, Expression Web / Design / Encoder, and WMM. I also keep the most popular browsers installed and up to date for cross checking. (I don't like using browser cross checking utilities)

Let me know here if you want to talk more about his and we can start shooting emails back and forth. (I prefer email as to document)

Thank you for the response, I would like to however let you know, that you struck a chord in your post, clause 4 I found personally insulting and offensive... (just in my opinion maybe others think otherwise - but in all fairness this is me not somebody else you said it to) Just letting you know, maybe you did not realise that in Plain English, what you wrote is insulting considering I appear to be the only person in 3 years+ to which you have said that to.

I would like if you could keep such an Opinion to your person and simply ask me to elaborate on my post rather than letting me know how you consider others, in case the question popped up I am from Britain and proudly speak English among several other languages of the world.

Anyhow moving on,
