Which one do you think is better when you take overclocking options into account?

The Q6600 is more expensive than the Q9300 though, however, I believe this is due to it's higher L2 cache.

post your thoughts

After some quick research, it sounds like the Q6600 is best for overclocking rather than the Q9300 which seems designed more for stock speeds. That's probably why it's more expensive also.

When I initially bought my Core2 Duo, I wanted the E6700 rather than the E6750 due to stability and lower heat. The main difference was the 6750 had a higher FSB but I was fine running at 1066. But so many ppl found the 6700 easier to overclock and remained more stable, the price jumped up on it and so I bought the 6750 for like $100 less.

The amd phenom x6 (6-core processor) is cheaper. That's what I would personally go for!

i was going to purchase a phenom cpu, but when I got a very nice intel motherboard, i changed my mind and decided to get an intel because everyone says they last longer.

I have a Thermaltake Lanbox Lite gaming system that I will be building, most likely with these parts:
I am building it as a HTPC because I need it to be small. I may pick a different video card so I can play stalker clear sky maxed out, but this setup should do it fine

Thermaltake Lanbox Lite

Intel DG33TL mainboard

Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz CPU

XFX HD4850 1Gb GPU

4Gb Avexir 800Mhz Ram

I would go for the i7-950 or the 17-2600k. With hyperthreading, you have 8 logical cores.

I got a Q6600 G0 stepping and it's an overclocking beast. Together with ASUS Maximus Formula mobo,I can even undervolt it and it goes to 3,5ghz stable.

The Q6600 is a very solid processor.

I have one in my 2nd PC,never gave me problems for the 2 years I used it.

If this is for an HTPC, why are you concerned about overclocking?

phaelax - i want to get it upto 3.0Ghz or 3.4Ghz so I can play newer games without issue, for less. i mean, the i7 is about 5 times more expensive than the core 2 quad, but they work just the same.

i changed my mind on the card, i will be getting something like this:

Gainward GTS450 Goes Like Hell 1Gb

Can you get sufficient cooling out of that tiny case if you overclock it?

I really like the look of that case, it's so unusual but in a good way.

well, i changed my mind again on the card. for only $100 I picked up an ASUS ATI HD3870x2 Top 1GB

when i buy the cpu, which i have decided will definately be a core2quad that is of a good model to overclock.

the ram will probably be 4gb 800mhz, but if i can afford it, 8gb 800mhz.

im thinking, it might be cheaper to purchase a s775 motherboard with ddr3 and pcie2 onboard. that way i am paying 1/2 as much for the same amount of ram, getting the same thing but at a cheaper price.

To be honest, that graphic card really ain't something special. It's an older model, easily outrunned by every new one in the same price range.

You shouldn't go for DDR3 ram,it's not worth it. I bought a used ASUS motherboard and the Q6600 with it and I have 4gb of DDR2 ram and the speed is more than good.

The difference in speed between DDR2 and DDR3 is minimal. So if you have some DDR2 ram,you should use it.

Fair enough if he already has ddr2 ram, but ddr2 is what... 800mhz? compared to ddr3 which can go up to 1600mhz.

Just googled, awesome, you'll need a pretty awesome motherboard to use them though, correct?

I have one of these, and for the price it is amazing! It is faster than my brother's Q6600.

DDR3 can go up to 2500 mhz

But if you want to futureproof, go DDR3, if you don't care/already have DDR2, go for that

ddr3 costs about 1/2 as much as ddr2.

so i might aswell get the same amount of memory in ddr3 with a m/b for the same price, and it would be faster.

lets say i had about $400 to spend. i could get either:
Phenom II x6 2.8Ghz (hex core) + 8gb ddr3 1333mhz ram + mainboard
Q6600 2.4Ghz (quad core) + 8gb ddr3 1333mhz ram + mainboard

the phenom system would cost about $50 more, but it is twice as high in the list.

also, i was playing GTAIV on my pc yesterday, i could max everything out and it was playable with 1gb ddr2 667Mhz and a Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz. The memory is probably the bottleneck in this. (everything was on highest except for textures, due to the low memory it would not allow anything higher than low)

but yes, when this whole system is done, i will be able to sell the old cpu, mainboard and memory for about $100 and i will put aside another $100, then i will probably get a HD5870.

You can't really compare Q6600 to that Phenom. The Phenom is really way faster.

well, as long as it is faster than this computer i will be happy.

i have no idea what made me post that. but anyway, yea i will probably end up getting the phenom 1055t or maybe the 1090t. but that depends on how much money i have to spend. i might have $500.

my other post has not shown up yet so sorry that i an posting twice in a row, i am still on some moderation thing.

i have now got enough money to finish off the rig with the 2.5Ghz Phenom x2 6core (1055t), 8gb of G.Skill Ripjaws and an MSI mainboard. The total cost of these parts is AU$419

Now, I do have another pc here with a DVD burner, 120Gb HDD, 1Gb ram and a 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo. I might get upto $300 for it with a 17" LCD screen. That would give me the ability to purchase a Gainward GTX460GS 2Gb graphics card.

after that, my build is done and i can play my games in peace knowing that i can crank the settings up to maximum for a year and a bit. Maybe more.

thanks for the assistance with this, you really got me to make the correct decisions with what to buy.

EDIT: With the new Thermaltake Lanbox LITE and the better PSU (Thermaltake 430w), GTA IV is capable of upto 60fps maxed out on the Core 2 Duo setup with 1gb ram. The second i move, it drops to about 20 due to the low frequency and size of the ram. It is also laggy due to the lower end CPU. I will create a video of what i get out of the system in about 1-2 weeks, when i will receive my parts.
