February 3D Compo: "Under Construction!"

Grab your tools of choice, the 'BUILD' is on!

After a small break from the 3D compos in January, we're back with an all new compo. This time the theme is 'Under Construction'. What does this mean to you? Show us what comes to mind, weather it be tools, buildings, bridges, machinery, clothes, anything you can come up with under this theme will work. Now get building and impress us with your constructive designs.

This compo will run through to February 25th 2010

Reiteration of the rules..

1) For 3D Best Model, a model is *required* for judging. (attach it to your final entry post.)
2) For 3D Best Texture, a texture map (UV or Seamless) is *required* for judging. (attach it to your final entry post.)
3) For 3D Champion both a model and texture are *required* for judging. (attach them to your final entry post.)

To Impress the judges..

4) Beauty shots/renders help allot and we give brownie points for this.
5) WiP mesh views and posts of your work-in-progress also get brownie points. We like to see how the models go from concept to finished.
6) Rigging and animating get huge brownie points. (this does not apply if the contest is for static objects.)
7) Game ready Low poly models get even more brownie points.

and the final rule..

8) Have fun!

Cheers!

this sounds interesting, i think i'll try and make a pipe cutter, one quick question, are we restricted to a particular time period i.e. modern day or could we make sci-fi tools based off of tools currently in use?

EDIT
didnt want to double post, decided to make a start anyway, it's very wip, i'll set up a wip thread after this post, don't you worry

Im actually going to start things anew with the new year and enter a competition I promised to (for once ). Ive already made a start on this times entry... here is the WIP shot:

Weighs in at 400 polies ATM. Planning to add a lot more though, so probably wont be the best for FPSC.

Tell me what you guys think

Heres the final version of the "Under Construction" bridge untextured. W.I.P shot (just to make it clear...). Now onto the PAINFULL task of texturing this

Cheers,
Anayar

P.S: Yep, I see the mesh error... fixing that now

Looks okay, needs more detail especially being a bridge, Add some dings or chamfer on the railing, give the road more depth, and the sign needs alot of work(look at some reference pictures and try to follow the shape as close as possible)

Try and separate the railing from the road by some sort of curb or a sidewalk.

Other than my very critical (sorry) post, its a good base model.

Looks like you guys are gonna have fun with this one, keep up the great work.

@Mazz426 I sure hope there is still construction around in the future, or on other planets, Sci-Fi construction is perfectly fine.

Cheers!

Working on a trailer. Here's a wip.

[edit]
Here's the almost finished model, just need to add door and smoothing groups. 701 Polys.

[edit]
here is the photo i went off of.

*** I know alot of Poly optimization can be done, working on it now***

[edit]
If this is getting to be too many images just let me know and ill change it.
Anyways, i did some poly reduction but decided to chamfer the stairs and add a door.
Its at 799 polys now.

Not decided what to make yet but will be aiming for a low poly model in .x format that will be available to everyone for free.

it's at 1944 tris plus i still have to add a hammer or something in his hand..

here's some screenies so far

so far he just has a quick paint job using the truespace paint..

Ok, I've had a go at making a large building.

Here's the model in ac3d

and because I don't have a proper render program. Here's a "beauty" shot in fpsc, with shaders.

[update]
Got back from workout and ate dinner, got the stairs, the wood support blocks, and basic metal lining around the bottom (i think im going to make it a wooden lining but im not sure yet)

Here is the model and texture. The railing is white but it doesnt exactly look bad. Clocked in at 799 Polys.
If anyone still isnt sure the relation between it and construction , its a foremans office that the Boss stays in.

Well, seeing these entries I don't think I have a chance. I guess I'll go for best texture. I call it "Cornerstone".
Obviously very WIP on the texture, and a five minute mesh.

the texture work is going good MMOJ, but your trailer is very short, even if you dont add the windows a bit more length would feel better for it i think.

Ill take your advice ortu, rendering preview now, i will see to it that i make a window on it. Infact, i might make it segments, so that you can make it as long as needbe.

mazz, its good, but two crits, texture size is alot bigger then it needs to be for such a low poly model. (but hey, we can downsize it ourselves)
And the zip file was humongous, considering, my connection to TGC is around 100kb/s.
Otherwise it looks good.
