During an over-enthusiastic PC cleaning session today I seem to have managed to uninstall the software that allows me to hear sound.

All I can hear now are the fans.

It might have been something called SoundMax. Unfortunately I don't know which particular software and/or driver to download and install.

Any suggestions on what to do next?

what model number is your motherboard? If your have an OEM machine like a dell, gateway, hp and you haven't put in a custom motherboard. What is your computer model? With either of this information you can find a link to the driver on the manufacturer's website.

When it comes to hardware issues I'm a total noob. How can I find the motherboard model number? Is "motherboard" called something else by Windows?

Dxdiag etc tell me things like this:

Quote: "No sound card was found. If one is expected, you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer."

How do I find out the hardware manufacturer? And which hardware?

I hope the fix is simple once I've sorted out these details.

It's printed on the motherboard itself, the manufacture name and the model number is usually imprinted on the PCB board in large-ish letters, usually somewhere around the middle, often near the PCI slots.

You probably won't have much luck finding it inside windows. It might be found by running something like sisoft sandra, but usually not.

Is this a custom built computer someone sold to you? If so, you'll probably have to open her up and look. If it's an HP or something, give us the model number on the front/rear of the computer casing.

You might get lucky and windows will have the driver listed in windows update if you're on windows 7 or vista.

Yes it is.

I'd need to know where to look and what to look for. I'll have a look around to see if I can find anything.

Actually this problem is a bit weird. I was only uninstalling stuff that hadn't been used for several months so it's a bit odd that something that's in constant use would be affected. Perhaps there's a different problem on my machine? If it is it's a strange coincidence since I know I uninstalled something with a name like SoundMax. I'll try a reboot just in case.

Hello

For finding system info details,

click Windows <Start> button

Either
--- click <Run...> and enter "MSInfo32.exe"
OR
--- navigate to \All Programs\Accessories\SystemTools\Sytem Information

Your PC info is in there

All the best

Thanks for that suggestion.

Actually, Jerico2day hit the nail on the head when he said

Quote: "You might get lucky and windows will have the driver listed in windows update if you're on windows 7 or vista."

When I shutdown the computer a few minutes ago, Lo and Behold!, Windows Update detected that a device driver needed to be installed and installed it. Everything seems fine now.

So thanks for helping.

I'll try to be more careful in future.

The audio hardware in MSInfo 32 will be in the under Components\Sound Device which will help deduce what drivers & software are required for GreenGaldalf's audio to be fixed

Alternatively, there are 2 free programs available on the web,
"HWInfo32" (my personal favourite) and "Belarc Adviser", they also give detailed reports on a PC specs if MSinfo32 doesn't give enough info.

--- EDIT ---
Glad you have audio back. All is good!

gg, when i read the title, my first thought was the battery in your hearing aid went bad.

once i read the actual issue, i decided it was time for you to update your eyeglass prescription, instead.

when i read your solution, i decided it was much more than either of the previously expected issues... my hunch, now, is that you were plugging your mouse into the toaster again.

no matter. glad to have you back
