Here's a simple poll you guys can take to help me figure out how to design my icon for my game. Please! In this collage of icons, which THREE would get you most interested in finding out about its game? Any insight into why you chose them would be great too! If you know the games in question, try and remain impartial and pretend you don't.

Easiest way to reference them is a grid ref (1,1 top left, 4,3 bottom right).

I'd have to say (1,1), (1,3), and (2,2). They're the cleanest, and that's something I'd look for in an icon.

Wouldn't 4,3 be bottom right?

Anyway:
1,1
4,1
1,3

I like 2,2 (the character with the big eyes), followed by the one right next to it 3,2 (the guy with the gas mask), and 1,3 last (the ship).

Well spotted ...... just testing!

Interesting combos there guys. 1,3 (bottom left ship) is coming up the most popular so far.

(1,1) because I love tanks games
(2,2) because it looks weird
(4,2) because most games that focus on simple graphics like that have really cool gameplay!

Well, in the first post I actually put the icon I'd designed into the group, and only Grog picked it out. It was 3,2. Not only that, but he thought it was a gas mask, rather than a pilot. So I think, although it is quite representative of the game's feel, it obviously doesn't grab people's attention. So along with other feedback I received, you guys convinced me to redesign.

So here's the new design, trying to be a bit more eye-catching. It's at 3,2. What do you think?

Quote: "So here's the new design"

did you change something in the initial post? i don't see a difference between attached images. meanwhile, 3,2... the pilot, suggestions:

1) helmet's black outline is blurry. crisp lines would be better.

2) remove detail from mask (cheeks and mouth) and top of helmet (red triangles)

3) sides and top ("outside") doing nothing for me. use "space" or "sky" (with motion blur?), as appropriate. bottom = whatever color for pilot's uniform to contrast with space/sky.

as-is, i think "grey cat wearing sunglasses and a shower cap"

/2cents

(1,1) Looks to me like some kind of web game icon (but caught my eye before all the rest (possibly just because it's top left, hard to tell)) (Not sure why the tank is on fire though, slightly worrying to think about xD)

(2,1) Looks like the kind of logo you'd find on a cheap fishing rod or a fishing game handheld console but is like, off centre and annoys me.

(3,1) Looks like an achievement in a source game so I therefore kind of ignored any sense of the icon - it's also on a papery texture so it doesn't really catch my eye.

(4,1) Looks like the icon to a new flight sim but doesn't need/needs something else in the background.

(1,2) Looks like a unit icon from Total Annihilation so I was drawn to it but I don't think that counts. - It also has no border so it doesn't seem like it'd work as an icon.

(2,2) Looks like it should belong to an indie game on the link to download it from a download site. The background isn't immediately logical but works because it fits and contrasts with the eyes.

(3,2) Looks like a clan logo for some sort of Battlefield game but as Virtual Nomad pointed out, the background doesn't seem to have any significance. - I guess it would if it was like, your clan/country's flag or something. :S

(4,2) Looks like it should be the main character in a children's adventure/story game. ! So therefore I can't pass verdict because it looks awesome if you're into that kinda thing. xD

(1,3) Looks the best one for a website logo as it's small, simple and had a name you can actually read easily (unlike 4,1 where you have to spend longer finding the actual writing)

(2,3) Looks like it belongs to a Facebook game but you can't read the text so I think possibly just a cow on a picture of a field would have been a better design.

(3,3) Would work as an icon but seems to ruin it with the 1 in the corner. - But we all love pictures of sharks chasing girls

(4,3) Doesn't look like an icon at all and therefore doesn't draw my attention - it just looks like someone's avatar on a forum.

My choice overall though as to the ones that I'd be interested in are (1,1), (2,2) and (1,3)

4,2... cows are awsome. I dont think this is the way to go about this becuase the images your giving us are all unrelated. If you were to do a bunch of images that were related to you project and then ask us wich one caught our attention i could better see that helping.

But 4,2. You could make space cow game.

From what I can see, at least some of these images are from the app store. I assume he's using them as a comparison because in the app store that little icon is what's going to grab your attention and possibly click to find out more.

For your icon, there are a lot of elements that clutter the impression. I'm not certain, but I'm not really a fan of square icons or rounded edges in icons just so they achieve that shape for desktop applications. Just the helmet would probably work better for PC.

Simplifying the helmet might also work. Instead of adding a lot of detail in it, remove that and make sure it speaks 'its simple' instead of 'chaos', 'clutter' or 'wtf?'.

Thanks for the continued feedback. I've actually revised it for a third time, base on feedback from here and elsewhere. Everytime I do, someone finds fault in it. So I've concluded you can't please everyone, and am just going to stick with my current design. I'll redesign it if I feel I'm not getting enough exposure and want to try reinventing the "first impression" on the market.

I'll post up the updated graphic when I'm on the right machine. Then I'll expect more people to disagree with it!

@KeithC - You're only the 2nd person to appreciate the design, but too late now .... I've changed it again.

A lot of icons are copies of the game's box art or some high-res image, which I really don't like at all. The whole point of an icon is to be instantly recognizable, it should be the logo for your game. When you stick this high-res icons next to each other you can't tell them apart!

[1,1] 4/10: What is it? A crude tank? Where are the flames coming from? I don't like the high contrast colours.

[1,2] 1/10: I have even less of an idea what this thing is. Even squinting at it doesn't reveal anything. It's too dark.

[1,3] 6/10: Nice clean image and good colours. It's a bit too detailed for an icon, when regular size it will be hard to tell what it is or read the text.

[2,1] 5/10: The orange is a bit harsh but at least we can tell what this game is about.

[2,2] 7/10: This one caught my eye first, it's very crisp and clear, plus monsters with big teeth are a good way to get people's attention.

[2,3] 0/10: The worst of the lot. I have no idea what is going on here, there is far too much in the image, if I look closely I can see a cow.

[3,1] 3/10: This one doesn't stand out very well.

[3,2] 6/10: Looks like a rabbit in a flight mask. Now I see the background is red and white, that should be changed to colours that are different to the mask thing. The mask is quite interesting and there's nothing else to distract your attention (apart from the background) so that helps.

[3,3] 2/10: Not a good icon, it looks like part of a bigger image, the shark's colour is too similar to the backdrop and nothing fills the image so when this is regular icon size you wont be able to see much.

[4,1] 6/10: I don't like how the backdrop is brighter than the aeroplane. Apart from that it's okay.

[4,2] 8/10: This is the best icon of the lot. It's very clean and clear and the little character is so distinct that you could put up 100 icons and I'd still easily be able to find him (which is what some people's desktops are like ).

[4,3] 4/10: Looks more like a poster than an icon.

Everything worthwhile requires effort.
