I have to admit, I don't think zombie films are scary, but I never did. They're not horror in the terrifying sense. The horror of a zombie movie is the idea of an apocalyptic world where all your family and friends are dead, society no longer exists, and absolutely everywhere you turn or go in the entire world, death is waiting, even if any one zombie by itself isn't that dangerous. It takes a certain willingness and imagination to enjoy a good zombie movie.
For this game to meet all those criteria and work, it has to do the following:
- Develop the characters very well, so you really care about the people around you and feel their loss when they get killed.
- Fill the game with lore and story that makes you feel isolated, and without hope.
- Give you plenty of options for escape and fighting, but make it relentless, so you never feel safe.
- Give you more to worry about than just going from a to b, and killing stuff as you go. You need to worry about where to sleep safely, getting food, protecting yourself, first aid, helping people you genuinely care about (rather than just being told you care about them) etc.
It's a tall order for any game.
